It’s the 10th for me. I’m going to wait until next week and if the 10 day forecast looks good, it’s go time!

calculate how much fertilizer you will need.
What fertilizer are you using?
Do you use any other fertilization in addition to running this?
How often do you run it?
I need this system.
ETA: best way to calculate gph… run an emitter over a bucket for an hour (or a few to avg), then multiply by # of emitters over all the beds?
How do I find out my water pressure?

That doesn't sound too bad
It’s really simple. Now you can spend all your time weeding and on bug patrol.

I add 13-13-13 to the soil a couple of weeks before plant out. I pinch off any existing flowers for the first week or two to let the plants get established. After that once they start flowering I’ll feed every other week with a bloom booster. When heavy production starts I’ll start feeding once a week.
Past couple of years I’ve been using Sea Grow 4-26-26. But they’ve gone up in price a lot so I am thinking of trying something else. I think I’m going to try this Farmers Secret and see how it does. The liquid will save me the trouble of having to dissolve the dry fert.

That’ll work. Or you could look at the manufacturer’s specs for your drip system. They should have the gph listed for their emitters.

You can find cheap gauges like this one and just hook it up to your faucet and turn it on.

Thanks for all of that. I’m ordering a fert system today.
When calculating SF for fert, do you use the entire bed area or the width of a row x length…. So for example in a 4x8 bed, is it 32 SF, or something less like 16 SF (1ft wide row)*(8 ft L)*(2 rows)?

No problem!
That’ll probably depend on how your drip line is set up. My raised boxes, I basically have the drip line snaked to cover the entire box. So I’d use the entire area in my calculation. My main garden has single rows so I calculate the area of the rows and add them up.
ETA: That might not even be the best way to do it. But it has worked for me so far.

I decided to hold off on planting until next weekend. Long term forecast has a night in the low 40s next weekend and I’d like to get a better idea about that before I sow cucumbers etc.
I've got some in but saw that forecast. I feel I'll be alright but we shall see.

I just need a solid week of no rain. Doesn't look like that's going to happen.

Been harvesting asparagus every day for the past couple of weeks.

That's awesome! Where are you? I didn't think it got cold enough down here for asparagus.
Posted on 3/7/24 at 10:09 am to Zappas Stache
I now have 11 sprouts. This is year 3. I am guessing I need to wait one more year to harvest?

Well I got the B-Hyve in today. Got the wifi hub and the timer all connected through the app. I put the wifi hub in the living room window and brought the timer out to the garden where I’ll be running my water line. No connection issues! Programming this thing seems simple enough. There’s also plenty of advanced “smart” features that I’m going to have to tinker with. But so far so good.
I plan on tackling the water line project this weekend. I’ll update when done.

How did you go about planting? They look like they’re not in a dedicated bed for asparagi.

I'm using 3/4" PEX and plan on burying it about a foot down. I'll have a short stand of galvanized pipe on each end sticking up out of the ground. I was thinking about renting a trenching machine but it seems like overkill for little over a 60' run. I have a trench shovel and the ground should be soft enough after this rain so I'm hoping it's not too difficult a job.
It'll probably end up being with back breaking work cause I underestimated the job. That's how things usually go for me.

How will you keep the galvanized pipe secure in the ground?
Posted on 3/8/24 at 8:58 am to meeple
Well, it’ll be half buried. So it should stand up on its own just fine. If not I’ll drive some rebar in the ground and strap it to that for reinforcement.
Also on the faucet end in the garden I will be housing the pipe in a 4x4 vinyl post to make the aesthetics a little better.
ETA: Sort of like this:

Anyone in Baton Rouge planning on planting this weekend? I was going to wait until next weekend hoping it would warm up but next weekend's forecast looks similar to this weekend.
