Just a change from one crop to the next. Multiple ways to do it. I was trying a relay planting where I seed the new thing while the old is still there, then pull out the old in a few weeks. Advantage is you get the new thing in the ground quick, and it can be protected from blazing summer sun by the old plant. Did that successfully with sweet potatoes under beans. Eggplant under tomatoes success is still TBD.
But the disadvantage is you don't really get to clean up the bed, weed, assess soil condition, cultivate, amend, etc. So that's what I'll do before planting theseeding the Butternut into the cucumber bed.

Because the 2023 Spring garden is still kicking, I’m not letting it languish if the first page. I’ll get some pictures today or tomorrow. Black eyed peas and greens are up after about 3 days in the ground. Got a watermelon we are watching to see if it will be ready for July 4. Unless the raccoons get it!

I pulled up some of my beans and cucuzzi gourds on the trellis. I'm loving another variety of edible gourd that i planted (Indian snake bean) so I'm hoping these are as good.
The beit alpha and straight 8 cucumbers got slaughtered by the heat. Pulled them up and replaced with Kajari melons. Armenian Yard Long cuke plants haven't been phased by the heat.
Put my watermelon starts in the ground. Will probably be yanking my tomatoes in a week or two.
Canned 8 pints of salsa. Should have used more hatch peppers but still came out tasty. Thanks Bluemoon for the recipe. Didn't follow it exactly but used it as a base.

I just got back from vacation and boy is my garden a mess!
I had a relative watering it for me while I was gone. She even did some picking. But holy cow is everything growing wild! The watermelon vines have pretty much taken over. I will have to do some serious pruning and weeding. And I have a few HUGE watermelons that are just about ready to pick.
The pumpkins are starting to vine and I’ll probably have to remove the netting from over them soon. But I had half a dozen vine borer moths in my trap when I got home, so I’d really rather keep them covered as long as possible.
ETA: I guess we should transition over to a fall thread soon. Maybe I’ll wait till next month.

Completed the pulling and weeding this morning. Got some gopher action in the sweet potatoes. I have really been impressed by the cut flower row I planted this spring. The butterflies love the flowers.
Going to start the fall tomato seeds tomorrow.

I don't think I'm going to be doing any this year. In fact, I'll probably just be doing a small fall garden. Likely just cabbage, mustard greens, carrots, garlic, and onion. I'll probably let the pumpkin vines take over most of the garden.
I will definitely need to get my soil tested and see if I need to make any adjustments before next spring. Not that it was a failure, but I feel like my spring garden wasn't as successful this year. But that may also have been the odd weather patterns this year.

Between a broken foot and a vacation, my spring garden descended into madness
I'm planning a small fall garden of mostly broccoli, English peas, and I have okra going already.
I will send a soil sample to LSU when I turn it over for the fall.

If you have tomatoes already let some suckers grow and root them and you'll have a head start.

Pulled all of my tomatoes yesterday.

How did you know it was ready to pick? I struggle with it.

That's off of 12 Parks Improved Whopper plants.
Most productive and disease resistant tomato I've found. And they taste taste good too.

I see it’s an indeterminate too, that’s impressive.

Yeah I’m still honing the practice. But I use a few things to decide. The ground spot should turn from white to a yellowish/cream color. The outer skin should turn from shiny to dull. And the tendril directly above the stem will completely dry up and turn brown.

What could be biting my tiny new cucumbers off? Went from heavily loaded to nothing in a day. I found one still on the vine with half of it broke off. I wrapped netting around them in case…

I did cantaloupe because 1) I like them better than watermelon, but 2) I had read that they're easier to determine when ripe. What sucks is the squirrels got the first round, and the one that are left aren't ready yet. Was hoping for 4th of July fresh melons.

So how about this?
Found a Hubbard squash hiding in the grass! Thing is heavy.
