I’m not a big mushroom eater. But I’ve always found those mushroom growing kits to be neat. I wouldn’t mind doing some portobellos.

Finally plucked a cabbage. Pretty nice one at that. Just in time for some New Year smothered cabbage!
In a couple of weeks when I get my pepper seedlings started for the spring garden I will fire up the spring thread. I think next year I’m going to forego planting pumpkins and do a bigger fall garden. If I do plant any it’ll be maybe just one sugar pie pumpkin plant. I had 3 this year, on top of 4 large varieties, and they took over the entire garden and made way too many. Not to mention constantly battling the vine borers is just a pain.
Anyway, it has definitely been fun and educational. I always enjoy seeing everyone’s production! Keep the pictures coming!

Mushrooms are really easy to grow if you have a monotub dialed in to the right air exchange and patience. The forum Shroomery is a very helpful place.

Hey, thanks. I will have to check it out. I have been doing the mushroom thing for about 2 years, but I still have a LOT to learn.

Pillage, what sticky traps do you use in your garden for squash vine borers, and where did you get them?

Not in S Louisiana but we have always planted on President’s Day and it’s worked out really well.

We planted potatoes probably 2 months ago. They have grown well.

Amazon
I didn’t catch a single vine borer in them, though. Not one. I did catch a couple of bees, lots of other small insects, and a bird. I quit using them shortly after that.

Light upgrade for the spring.

If you don't want the seedlings to get leggy (and you don't), the light needs to be an inch above the seedlings. Also, as warm as it has been, the seedlings will be much better off in full sun after germination.

Thank you. The picture was during setup of the lights. I'm starting pepper seeds this weekend.

When are you starting tomatoes? I think I did mine late January last year.

Speaking of tomatoes, just got home and my purple cherokees are still loaded with fruit as are my jalapeños. Broccoli looks meh, cabbages coming along nicely.
Ordered onion slips from Dixondale today. Started preparing row for planting. Going to top off the raised beds tomorrow. I need to start eradicating the squirrels in backyard. Think they have buried close to 2M hickory nuts in my raised beds.

I’m going to start some tomatoes next weekend to try and get an early start. Peppers started yesterday.
We put our onion sets in Dec. 9.

I try to aim for 6 weeks before plant out. Which is mid March for me. I’ll be starting mine in February.
I’m still waiting on some pepper seeds to be delivered. I’ll be starting those (and the spring garden thread) soon.

At what temperature do I need to cover my garden? I have broccoli, cabbage, collards, carrots, lettuce, beets and kale growing right now. Do I need to cover if its projected to get to 32 degrees or would it need to get lower than that to harm them? Thanks.
Posted on 1/9/24 at 1:53 pm to labguy
I'd say maybe the lettuce, depending on the variety, might need to be covered. Everything else is very cold hardy and I wouldn't worry about it.
When we had that extreme cold back in 2021, I had snow and ice and 7 degree weather. I had some cabbage that was buried under the ice. They all survived.

Thanks. I mainly grow tomatoes in the spring just trying a winter garden this year.
