What does everyone put in their tomato hole? I normally put Bone Meal and a soil/compost mixture.

I put bone meal, epsom salt, calcium nitrate, and compost. I used to be pretty specific about it but now I normally just put about a tablespoon of the first three and a handful of compost.

I just add bone meal.

I put a half of a mason jar of mixed miracle grow for each plant. My soil already has compost and peat moss, and I mixed in some 10-10-10 a few weeks ago.

I have been saving all the pine shavings from my new brood of chicks. Is there any reason why this wouldn't work as a mulch for my vegetables?

It should work just fine as long as it isn't soaked with fresh manure or urine. That could potentially burn your plants.

Don’t use anything with chicken droppings directly on plants. Throw into compost ben and let them breakdown. Not worth the risk, stuff can be too hot for plants.

Depending on how many chicks he has it probably isn’t enough poop to burn anything. Definitely compost as they get older though. It’s crazy how much shite they plop down at night.

I have 3 hens and a rooster and was contemplating doing the same thing. Was planning on sprinkling the soiled bedding onto the top of my garden’s mulch and seeing how it does

If you scoop up and compost the poop piles under the roost bars where they sleep at night you will probably be fine. That is there the vast majority of their pooping is done anyways.

I got about an inch and a half of rain last night. It was greatly needed for the lawn but my seed trays were over flowing. I had to go out and drain them. It should help everything else though.

I'm ready for these mild temps coming up and everything to start waking up.

Yeah all of my seedling trays were full of water, the wind knocked over a bunch of them, and I'm just tired of having to babysit them. They are hardened off and I think I'm going to start putting them in the ground as soon as I get home this afternoon. The 10 day forecast looks good and they should be fine.

This is where I am at. I'm planning to harden off the larger of the tomato plants this week and getting them in the ground mid next week.

My uncle always said to follow the pecan trees. If they were blooming, there was no chance of a freeze for the rest of the season. Take it for what it is worth.

I already have a nice soil, peat, compost mixture. The only thing I add when planting is 1 or 2 eggshells under the plant. Don't see the need for adding epsom salt. I know a lot of people use it but it can create problems if not needed. Using the eggshells I haven't had a problem with blossom end rot in years. I sprinkle a little 13-13-13 on top of the soil.

If you follow the pecan trees you will be planting late in my opinion. That's good advice if you are a little farther north of BR. I planted March 5th this year. Didn't anticipate the late freeze last weekend. Had minimal damage on 1 plant and all the rest were fine. I covered them well. I'll be harvesting mid to late May.

No doubt. It is a very conservative strategy. My Early Girls will be in within the week and I expect to see something similar to you.

But at least there’s some science to that. Pecan trees start budding when soil temps are warm enough. The one that bothers me is “never plant until after Easter!” Well, that date changes every year. This year Easter is April 17th. That’s waaaaaaaay too late to just be putting everything in the ground and you’ll be fighting bugs and disease before you get a decent crop.

10 day forecast looks good, so I went ahead and put everything in the beds.

The lowest temp I see in the forecast for my area is 42 on Sunday morning. I put all of my peppers in the ground yesterday, and a few of the tomatoes. Going to try getting the rest in today and/or tomorrow.

I planted a few today after work. Will plant the rest Saturday.
