Too early to put vegetables in the ground in BR?

I’d wait. Forecast is showing low 30’s next weekend for me (St Landry parish).

Me too. I need to invest in some grow lights.

Potatoes going in today. Last year we filled the back of the CanAm with potatoes.

This is year 2 of our garden. Last year I spend a bunch of money on 12 ft tall T posts and a fence to keep the deer out. This year will be new organics and automated drip irrigation. So it’s cardboard, then the mushroom compost and some topsoil. Mulch for the walking paths. My son will be thrilled when he hears the plan for today!

I’m going to plant a few rows, depends on how many of those fancy row covers I have in shed.

Was just out there feeding chickens and noticed my Marconi peppers are putting on leaves at their base. I guess I’ll leave them in the ground and see what happens.

Finished building and filling the new beds yesterday morning. I now have 81 sq ft of growing space that's 2 ft high and hopefully out of reach for our Schnauzer. I ended the day by dry-fitting the irrigation.

Today I'll glue everything up and connect a timer. This should reduce the amount of over-watering that took place last year. The wife has already got broccoli, strawberries, kale, lettuce and chard in the ground. I'm think I should wait a couple weeks before putting anything else in the ground in NTX.

We gave up already today. Wind is blowing 25-30mph. Not fun with cardboard and weed barrier.

You do pvc irrigation?

I’m abt to buy some pvc shark bite fittings for ends and pex to bury it from the house to the garden, I don’t feel like dealing with pvc runs. Then I can just rent a cable trencher and run it along too.

I did 1 row this morning at my camp - weeding and turning it over with a digging fork is tough, but I don’t have a tiller here. Going to try and get a second row done today too.

Are these tomato plants too leggy? First time doing seeds and they look kind of weak.

They’re not too bad. The good thing about tomato plants is that if they’re leggy, you can just bury them deep when you go to plant and they’ll be fine.

Got another yard of soil and topped off my boxes this morning. Going to be doing watermelon, cantaloupe, and sunflowers in these for now.

Pulled the rest of my carrots. Didn’t do as well as last year with them, but a decent crop this year.

These darn tomatoes are ready to go in the ground. And it looks like I’m already getting some new growth after topping the jalapeño and cayenne peppers.

While I was getting soil, I picked up a few eggplant seedlings since mine failed. If anyone is in the Lafayette or Opelousas area, Lastrapes Garden Center has a ton beautiful vegetable plants for sale. Facespace link

My strawberries are making a ton of new flowers, and my blackberries have new growth popping out like crazy. Also noticed new canes coming up from the base.

Spring is so close I can taste it.

It's been warm this week up here in Dallas after last week's ice storm. But we have another cold front coming in tomorrow that will be close to 32 one night. I already got my tomatoes planted this week but I can protect small plants if we do get below 32.

I’m opening the box today. I have a nuc box ready to go and plan on trying to make a nuc colony when they’re ready.

today was a great day for maintenance and renovation.
got my flower and shrub beds cleaned up from the freeze and top dressed with a layer of rotten bark from the bottom of my stockpile

I pulled up and potted a dozen loquat seedlings before I gave up on the task. If anyone wants loquats I have hundreds. My fig cuttings have nice green buds on them too they should sprout soon

Yep. I got leftover weeds pulled and tilled up my beds and added fertilizer. Will wait til after next weekend's cold front to pass before I plant.

The queen has about 2 frames in the top box chock full of capped brood, and another frame with a little bit of eggs and larva. Some drone brood is up in the mix. But there’s still some room in the top box.

I actually found her in the bottom box which is still mostly empty. I did notice some fresh eggs on a couple of frames. I think I’ll wait another week and check in on them again. Don’t think it’s the right time to split yet.

Those Black Beauty eggplant plants you have look very nice.

They're my favorite variety which, of course, has been around for decades.

I particulary like that they yield large, tender eggplants through the summer and usually, with the help of additional fertilizer, continue making eggplants in the fall until the first frost of winter.

I had great success with them last year. We made a ton of baba ghanoush with them as well as other dishes. And of course we fried some.
