I remember watching a video you had posted on that topic. I don’t have any fruit or nut trees at the moment. But I’d like to plant a couple eventually.

I topped a lot of my pepper seedlings today. They only have 4-6 leaves but I wanted to go ahead and do it so I can plant mid March. I may go ahead and put some of my tomato starts in the bags and sow some cucumbers. Looks to be decently warm for awhile.

Putting down cuc seeds or anything for that matter this early is a gamble. I have done it and often put in cuc seads early but know the risk. A late frost and they history. but if ya guess right you can brag and be the hero of the spring with early veggies. The old timers always wait till the pecan trees bud. But the back yard gardener aint risking thousands of plants so why not gamble cuc seeds RE CHEAP AND THE WORST THAT can ahppen is ya gonna plant em again later. Good luck.

So I just got my seeds from Parks yesterday. Should I start them inside, or just wait? Everything says to start 4 to 6 weeks before last frost date. I'm in Opelousas, so that's March 14, which is alittle more than 3 weeks from now.
I feel like starting them now would still give me a head start on things, but when should I put them in the ground? I have tomatoes, peppers, eggplants that I will probably start inside. Beans, cucumbers, and squash will just go in the ground later.

I would. Put them under the most intense lighting you can. This will prepare them for the sunlight and make hardening them off easier. Maybe even put a fan blowing on them at low speed. It’ll take about a week before the seeds sprout.

Transplant them when the temp outside is staying above 60 most of the time. But temps in the 40’s won’t hurt them. Any lower than that might. A frost will damage them.
ETA: I would wait until the secondary leaves start to develope. Then you can move them outside to start hardening them off.

I’ll be sowing my beans and cucumbers about mid March.

If you're planting tomatoes from seed you better hurry. I live in Youngsville and started mine in January. They're ready to be transplanted, just waiting on the weather to get better.

That's why I don't understand Parks Seed having the shipping dates that they do. My seeds shipped on the 18th. That's already less than a month before last frost, yet they recommend starting them inside 4 to 6 weeks before last frost.

I buy most of mine from Ebay or Amazon

Being so far south, I try to plant on New year's day. Haven't done it, but I'm going to start planting peppers much earlier than that.
I put out a few plants last weekend just to get an early start. My seedlings are ready to go once they've hardened off.

I've been harvesting asparagus for about a month now which is earlier than usual. And it's been cold here in Dallas.

Some of my plants in my asparagus bed quit producing last year. I put out three packets of seeds last weekend to fill in. We'll see how they do.
If any of you have extra room, homegrown asparagus is much better that sto-bought.

Homegrown is like candy. It is the most dramatic difference from anything I've grown including tomatoes.

Yeah it is late to be starting tomato seeds. I start mine first week of January in my greenhouse. I started planting tomato transplants this week....got 75 in ground so far. Cucumbers I wait a bit I have found no benefit to starting in the greenhouse when seeds grow better straight out in the field but wait for a little bit of warmup for those. Cucumbers planted too early sprout and just sit there without growing.

I going to plant an Early girl tomato today, but hold off on everything else at least another week.

Hard to see cause the plants are still small. But, all of my tomatoes are planted and doing well so far. Planted them last weekend, actually. They are loving the sun today.
Carmen and California Wonder peppers are also enjoying the sun.
I need to get a few more bags of mulch for the bean and cucumber rows. But I’m not planted that for a few more weeks.

My tomatoes are ready to plant out. Just waiting on a break in the weather. A couple of my tomato seedlings are sick with something. I've had those little gnats flying around for awhile, and I found what looked like eggs on the bottom of a couple of the leaves (not aphids). I clipped the damaged branches, so we'll see if they come back. I want to get them outside though, because I feel like that would give them a jump start instead of just sitting under the lights. I'm going to prep all my beds/bags this weekend. Looks like we have a potential frost next Tuesday, but depending on that, I'm going to transplant my tomatoes either this weekend or next week.
Peppers will be out probably March 9 weekend.

I'm hoping for this weekend as well, but there's a cold front next week that I'm keeping an eye on.

The forecast said the temp this morning was supposed to be 38. At 6 am it was 43. Hopefully next weeks forecast is off too. If not I guess I’ll be covering my plants.

I should be planting tomato transplants once my yard dries up a bit. Still haven't started my beans and sweetcorn seeds in the ground yet. Been very wet.
