I'm outfitting a nice woodworking shop and am going to be getting a 20" planer. I might be able to get away with a 15", but I don't want to take a chance.

I'm really looking at the Powermatic 209HH. Anyone have any strong opinions on that particular planer?

I thought about a Felder/Hammer combo machine but I really don't see myself going that route.

Thanks all.

I don't see the value in spending 2 to 3K more for Powermatic than Grizzly.
They are both made in Tiawan, and while Powermatic truly is the Gold Standard, Grizzly will last 30 years.

Also, I have a 16 inch Jointer/Planer Combo, the jointer capacity is more useful than the 20 inch planer capacity.

An guy I once worked with also did custom cabinet building as a sideline and his entire shop was powered by Grizzly tools and he swore by them. He also turned out some fantastic work using those tools.

I would go with a 20" Grizzly with helical head.
I don't like the idea of a combo machine, too cumbersome and aggravating to switch.

Just get a few of these and quit the gym membership.

Seriously though, I have found hand tool woodworking much more rewarding and fun. Since I managed to break my jointer, I now joint by hand and enjoy the challenge. I do use my Makita portable planer for sizing my wood, but finish plane by hand to remove the scallops.

Never stand in front of the openings.

Saw a 6' foot poplar board shoot out about 20 feet and break into pieces after hitting a brick wall.

I don't think I will go Grizzly. If I were to go that route, I'd probably get a South Bend.

That's a large arse planer and seems like overkill unless you are making butcher block tops on the regular. Not to mention the power required to operate it.

While we disagree on the planer. The Powermatic PM2800B drill press is fabulous, and you should get it.

I'm building the shop from scratch, so I'm going to be doing the internal wiring. So 30 amp vs 40 amp means no difference to me.

The shop should be done soon and once the panel gets put in, I'll rough out all of the electrical runs, so I have freedom to run whatever I need.

I'm not dead set against Grizzly. I have a Grizzly dust collection system.

I'll give the 1033X another look.
