Here’s how it’s explained in the TD Premium Account contract:

Premium account holders get access to upvote/downvote analytics including names of posters that participated, and pics of their significant others.
Premium account holders also have access to multiple upvote/downvote selections per post and access to the hidden upvote/downvote counter which can only be seen by other premium account holders.
A $1000 check will be automatically deposited in a premium account holder’s financial institution upon receiving 1,000 upvotes per post, or 1,000,000 lifetime upvotes.

The voting system is a way for the website to harvest clicks from users who are too lazy / busy to post a reply.
