I have been following a pretty intense lifting program from Blue Star the past month and had some good results. I lift Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Off the other three days. I have been trying to do cardio on the other days.

My question, though, as my goal is to lose inches/get toned (as opposed to lose weight), is should I do cardio at all? I have been eating very healthy the past month, limiting sugar and carbs while eliminating alcohol. However, when I go for a jog, I get home and am starving. I am concerned that the calories I burn running just get eaten up later when I have to replenish from running (making that a wash) AND losing the rest benefits for hypertrophy and lean mass/protein synthesis to occur.

I clearly said in the OP that my goal is not to lose weight but to improve physique and lower body fat %. My question was clear...does cardio on my "off days" reduce the hypertrophy that I would gain from rest alone. Exercise for the sake of exercise does not arbitrarily achieve results.

You won’t lose muscle from doing cardio. That’s fricking stupid.

You're completely missing the premise of what I am asking. If I go for a five mile jog on my off days am I losing some of the positive the hypertrophic opportunity the muscle would be doing by just resting it. For instance, yesterday was a heavy leg day (front squat, back squat, etc.) and my legs are sore. Now, I am not saying that there are not other benefits of cardio, of course I know that, but I want to increase the muscle mass first therefore my metabolic rate increases and my natural calorie burning increase in correlation.

So eat more. If you got for a run you have to eat the calories back that you just burned. 5 miles isn’t even far so it won’t hurt you. Unless you’re trying to be a 230lb power lifter then cardio will only benefit you. It’s not hard.

I lift 4 days a week and swim and run 3 days a week and still gain muscle, because I eat.

I envy you being able to swim because my flexibility and range of motion seems limited just lifting and running. I hate the knee pounding. Would much rather swim a few miles than run it.

Swimming is by far the hardest, not on the body but mentally.

I still feel like I’m drowning. My shoulders have grown from swimming though, so that’s a plus.

Idk where you currently are, but unless you're fat, gaining muscle while in a caloric deficit isn't possible for most people.

It's why people bulk/cut.

The ravenous feeling is because you're depleted.

Do a protein shake with a banana tossed in or made with milk before the run. It'll help.

ETA: increased flexibility equals increased strength. Try to change your range of motion within lifts.

I normally try to include cardio in my warm up and cool down. Might do a little on my off days too

Yeah, I was a swimmer growing up. Problem with that is my technique is pretty dang efficient so when I swim a mile, I know that it its not calorie burning as much as folks who don't have the technique. Part of being a swim coach now...you can make swimming really easy.
