What do you define as fat? He has a lot of muscle for sure, but he also look like he has at least 50lbs or more of excess fat.

He's a legit 6'8, 425. You can't be ripped at that size.

I guess the best way to look at it would be a 350 lb NFL O lineman vs a 350 lb dude riding a Rascal around Walmart. You know who the strong athlete who carries some fat is, and the other guy is just fat.

Shaw clearly carries a ton of muscle, he's just trying to maximize weight too, so he has fat on top. That's just how it goes at really high body weights.

So only ~10% of his body is fat? That ain't bad IMO.

10% is excess fat.

Obviously he's not some kind of sloppy, flabby mess and of course he's an incredible athlete. When people talk about "being fat" or how fat is "too fat" etc. I think there's alot of subjectivity and differing definitions that get lumped together.

From a competitive standpoint of course he isn't "fat." From a medical/longevity standpoint he is large to the point of lowering his life expectancy, and his least useful and most harmful biomass from a medical perspective is his excess fat.

That could be said for pretty much any athlete though...I mean, Mike Tyson was 5'10, 240 which is considered obese for his BMI

Yep, that's why Eddie Hall decided to cut down. He said he would die if he stayed the way he was.

From a pure medical longevity point of view, even excess muscle without fat can be bad. I've seen several studies that list the best bodyweight for pure longevity at something that's underweight vs even the norm.

Pro strongmen benefit from maximizing weight and that comes with some fat. Shaw is actually in fairly decent shape and not particularly flabby. He has a YouTube channel where he's done cardio challenges vs his wife, and he might be the fittest 425 pounder on earth.

It's just a skewed comparison scale at that bodyweight.

I wonder if there's a big enough sample size to draw a useful conclusion. There aren't many big, not-fat people, and most of them are highly competitive athletes who often do other things that aren't good for their health.

OTOH in the elderly population, slightly overweight people have better medical outcomes.
