What's the benefit of Intermittent Fasting?

Is it skipping breakfast, thus having less calories in a day?
Or does it still work if you have the same amount of calories you normally would, just in a 6-8 hour time period?
Is it just a gimmick to eat less calories??

I find the ultimate benefit is allowing your digestive system 16 hours off and only 8 hours on. It’s amazing how much that particular change alone allows you to feel better, sleep better, increase alertness, improve endurance, etc...

It’s a tool for caloric control. And I find it helps me feel full at the end of the day. If you google it, you will find all kinds of “studies” that claim it sparks a thermogenic effect in your metabolism that burns fat faster. Those studies are mostly bullshite.
I like IF because I hate feeling hungry at night when I want to relax and sleep. I eat the bulk of my calories later in the day. I’ll typically have a cup of oatmeal early in the a.m. before my workouts. Then, I’ll try to push off eating until 1 p.m. That way, I’ll be eating the bulk of my calories later in the day, making me feel full longer. Otherwise, I would grab snacks and other unhealthy things at night when I should be sleeping.

I've been eating only 1 meal a day, in the evening, for years.
And I'm still a fat frick.
ETA- that's all changing soon. I ordered some supplements from GNC.

More or less, this.
For me it was more so convenience. Once I found out it didn't have any negative effect it was game on. It's so much easier only having to plan the 1-2 meals / day. Plus, it helps with regularity. I eat in the evenings and don't even have to set an alarm in the AM since the urge to drop a deuce forces me to get up and out of bed.

It's a gimmick just like Keto
Calories in -> Calories out is all that matters for weight loss.

When I was out of work I did alternate day fasting as a way to cut down on food costs. I would fast an entire day, then the next day eat one big meal.
I still gained a little weight, and the fasting days were miserable.

I used to believe this was all there was to it but research is showing it not to be the case.
Article about a Pennington fasting study
quote:
“Ours is the first study in humans that shows consuming all of your calories in a six-hour period provides metabolic advantages compared to eating the exact same amount over 12 hours or more, even if you don’t lose weight,”
quote:
The research is important, Ravussin said, because it shows for the first time in humans that the benefits of intermittent fasting are not solely due to eating less. Practicing intermittent fasting has intrinsic benefits regardless of what you eat, he said
quote:
The researchers found that the fasting diet improved insulin sensitivity, which reflects how quickly cells can take up blood sugar, and it also improved the ability of the men's pancreases to respond to rising blood sugar levels. The researchers also found that the blood pressure of the men was dramatically lowered, as well as their oxidative stress levels and their appetite levels in the evening.

Neither are gimmicks, they are tools just like everything else.
Both do offer increased blood flow to areas that normally have stubborn fat.
But in the end it is about caloric control, so long as protein intake is equalized.

If I were to begin IF, when is recommended to lift? I know fasted cardio is big on this board, but should a lift be done while fasted or not?

If you workout in the morning or around lunch then lift fasted and eat everything post workout.
If it's in the afternoon or evening then eat a small meal before and you're largest post workout.

Can be, up to you. Just lift and eat when convenient. Can it make a difference, yes but not nearly as much as consistency

That's not intermittent fasting. You are supposed to eat the same amount of calories in the window.

I’m fasting right now. Blood work in the morning.

A) there are some well-designed studies showing this, but
B) that's not the real benefit of time-restricted eating v mere simplistic genral caloric limitation. Autophagy, apoptosis, NLRP3 inhibition, mTor inhibition, cortisol regulation, insulin sensitivity, etc etc.
This is a well-designed study that is being followed up with bigger ones. I think the controlled diet via the school cafeteria v terrible pure questionnaire epi studies:
2018 BMJ pub
Eta: that study us re thermogenesis. The people I follow re fasting include, Satchin Panda, Valter Longo, Fung, and Attia (he isn't a "researcher" technically but just an awesomeness doctor and brilliant mind).
David Sabatini on mTor/rapamycin--i understand every 12th word or so, but still fascinating

When i do my blood in a 16+ hr fast i tend to have hugher glucose due to the glucose-sparing effect of fasting/ketosis (glucose-oxidation inhibition) . If i do it late afternoon after having eaten it's significantly lower. Pretty crazy.
