Has never happened to me, but I feel like I definitely would have handled it differently.

Based on this, his wait should have been about 4-5min? If you told him this, he should have been fine waiting

And when they stop asking and start demanding, then what?

I'm not disagreeing that I could have let him workout in between my sets, but he acted like he was entitled to it. It's first come; first serve in my book. Do I have to agree to let everyone who asks to workout in between sets?

My points:
1. The gym wasn't busy.
2. I had 2-3 sets left.
3. He stood there gleaming at me from not even 3 feet away.
4. I workout alone. Have no problem when it comes to working in between with dips, pull ups, and pretty much anything outside of squats and bench. Don't wanna have to interchange weights to accommodate for someone else. I'm very conscientious about the duration I use the equipment for, and always rerack my shite before leaving.
5. This guy sucks, and his attitude and actions were disrespectful.

I dunno man. I like working out alone too but I just throw my headphones in as soon as I say "sure, go ahead" and that signifies no talking.

I am impressed that 3 people were doing squats and another waiting. Now-a-days you don't see that in a gym. Kind of like a leprechaun fricking a unicorn, just doesn't happen.

This guy better have been 6’5 250lbs+. No way I’m going to get the guy working behind the desk to handle it for me.

Yeah, and would have taken shorter rests too if it was someone who didn't act like that guy. But, here's the thing, he asked how long it would be so I told him how many sets I had left do about 6-8 minutes. He the demanded to let him workout in between, and stood there being a prick when he didn't get his way. Told him I'd be right back, and he immediately started using the rack as I walked away to go get the guy from behind the desk.

Agreed, but I just prefer doing squats, cleans, DL, and bench on my own.

Your solution would have been what exactly? Keep in mind that my way, despite its beta-ness, ended without me getting kicked out of the gym or arrested. I'm just wondering how alpha-ing a crazy person would go.

It doesn’t have to be alpha at all. I would have taken even longer between sets, and listened to my music and kept squatting.

Just seems extremely unnecessary to go get someone in the middle of your sets to handle the situation. Ignore him and keep doing what you’re doing.

Just because you don’t want to be alpha doesn’t mean you have to be a fairy and go get help.

Perhaps you let him work in with you and maybe you would have made a new friend.....

Why not ask him what exercise he was wanting to do?

If he was squatting as well, maybe you two could give pointers to each other

You say fairy, I say a more mature and sensible way to resolve such a meaningless dispute. Just ignoring a problem rather than confronting it seems fairy to me. How was my action unnecessary? Do not live in a society?! It was clear he and I were not going to reach an agreement, so I decided to let an authoritative figure of the gym decide what to do.

Because, as mentioned before, I like doing certain lifts without someone else working in interchangibly. Not that irregular of a preference in my mind. Again, the gym was not busy, but the squat racks were all occupied, and I had told him I would be done in a reasonable amount of time. Why couldn't he wait till I was finished? Who's more selfish here?

I don’t get why you wanting to lift alone is such an issue. The equipment is first come first serve. The dude should’ve asked how many sets you have therefore giving you the chance to offer for him to work in with you. Not just assume he had the right to work in with you.

But yea I would’ve just taken more time in between sets and then started doing some bent over rows after.

I'm not saying you were wrong
I mean i wouldn't want him doing overhead press while I was squatting

But if he wanted to squat and if I knew we were on similar strength levels and such id tell him to join in.

Otherwise I think you handled it well

You didn’t do anything wrong, I’m very much a sarcastic a-hole that if he would have demanded to work in I would have let him but stand very close to the squat rack at the point where it’s bothering him the way it did to you.

All you can do in those situations is be sarcastic, laugh, and go along with it. If there were other people in there they would have your back if anything happened.

Yea frick that. I wouldn't have let him work in but I sure wouldn't have went and got somebody either. Would have been the day I do 100 squats sets with 3 min rest between while running my mouth the whole time.

I understand why you did what you did. If you are a non confrontational person you handled it correctly. In fact you prolly handled it correctly no matter what. But I'm an a-hole and don't respond well to the kinds of behavior he was doing.
