I’m in a cut and hitting my protein.
What causes guys to become “skinny fat” when they are losing weight so I can avoid that?

Like Mingo said, it's that you really don't have as much muscle as you thought.

Ok. So maintaining protein, keep strength training, and don’t go on a caloric crash or do excessive amounts of cardio and I should be good?

What would be considered an excessive amount of cardio?

more than the minimum needed to stay in a caloric deficit lol.
sorry, just depends on the person.
another thing that causes skinny fat is depletion during cutting. its a temporary thing but can mess with your brain for sure.

Just wondering if maybe I've been doing too much cardio
I'll evaluate progress at my next weigh in date and see if I need to adjust anything

Probably not. I've been doing a step program and have been averaging about 15k steps a day but only about 30 minutes of that is "cardio"
