I’m looking for a weight bench and adjustable dumbbells for my teenage boys. Nothing crazy but want it sturdy. I want the bench to be adjustable and it will just be used with the dumbbells. Any suggestions?

Powerblocks up to 50.

Rep fitness bench - AB 3100

You’ll drop $500+ but you’ll have equipment that will last a long time. You won’t have to upgrade if they really get into it. You can also recoup most of your money if you ever sell.

We got a Macy weight bench that my dad bought 25 years ago. That thing is built like a tank.

ill give you a couple options for benches, keep in mind that all of these are really nice and going to be much better, last longer and be safer than something cheap from like dicks, academy etc. list is in order of cheapest to most expensive

1) rep 3100 LINK

2) rep 4100 LINK

3) getrxd FIDAB-2 LINK

you will not need anything nicer but you could do something like the rep blackwing or rogue 3.0

as far as adjustable DB's.....you have a couple choices

1) nuobells- really nice, up to 80 lbs but if dropped can break

2) snodesport ad-80....same design as the nuoebells but can be dropped

3) adjustable olympic handles where you can just add olympic weights. rogue makes some nice ones.

4) pepin fast series- these are nicest but most expensive of all the adjustables.

5) ironmasters or pepin pro series. most similar to a db but also uses plates that come off and on and slowest to change

6) powerblocks elite stage 1- this would be my recommendation. comes with 5-50 and can be upgraded up to 90lbs overtime as they get stronger. pretty durable, i have had mine for over 10 years and only had 1 plate break which powerblock replaced very quickly. the elites now come with knurled handles.

Is the power block that much better than the other options? Is the shape odd when you’re doing certain lifts?

Also see the 2020 model is discounted on Amazon. Is there any reason not to get the older model?

It’s not that they are better. They are tried and true. They are super sturdy and fast to change. Seems like the company takes care of their customers.

You can do basically everything that you would normally do with a dumbbell. Goblet squats, DB pullovers, and tricep extensions might be different. You could still do them just may not feel like a traditional dumbbell.

Don’t skimp on adjustable benches. You can get away with a cheap flat bench, but I’d spend the money on the right adjustable. As poster above said, AB-3100 from Rep is consistently one of the better ones and Rep has been putting out quality benches for a while now. An honorable mention would be the Ironmaster one which is interesting because it has a ton of attachments you can buy with versatility always being a plus.

For dumbbells, Powerblocks are the generic go-to and what I have (5-90lbs). I’ve heard good things about Nuobells, but haven’t personally tried them.

I have the ironmasters and would give anything for some powerblocks. Ironmasters are awesome but a pain in the arse to change

I have this bench as well. Some things to note. Unless they've changed something in the newer versions, the bench height is weird, it's 2" taller than the REP bench I have. It's also much thinner (11" maybe). I don't use it for anything other than incline and leg extension/curls. That attachment is awesome BTW.

For the price of the powerblocks and other adjustables, you can get two sets of 1-inch dumbbell handles and a bunch of 1-inch plates in various weights. That's the route I went.

I've got two pairs of 25 lb plates, and eight 10 lb plates. Also I already had an old soloflex set of dumbbells with 4 each in 10, 5, and 2.5. So I have 3 sets of handles ready to go and can load up different weights on each set when I'm doing superset workouts. Most of the time I've got a set loaded to 40 and 50, and adjust the smaller ones for stuff like lateral raises, DB pullovers, triceps extensions etc.

I'll get one set loaded to 15-20, another to 35-40, and I pretty much always leave my heavies at 50 lbs each. Sometimes I'll add the 2.5s or 5s to that to get to 55-60, depending on what I'm doing. The quick adjust can be nice, I've used some at a hotel gym before, but I like just dropping one set an grabbing another that's ready to go. Less fuss while I'm working out.

Yes they can be. Any movement where you use both hands on one dumbbell, like overhead tricep extensions, you can't really accomplish the same grip as a traditional dumbbell. Wrist curls are also awkward due to the bars hitting your wrist/forearm. That being said, I haven't felt compelled to replace mine.

power blocks are awesome but you will lose the ability to do overhead extensions and pullovers. other than that, you can do every other exercise pretty much. i have had mine for 10 years, when the plate broke, 6 months or so ago and they replaced it no questions asked.

nuobells are better but, if you drop them, they break.

most people regret buying plates and seperate handles and end up regretting the ironmasters and even the peppins which are better than IM imo.

the best adjustable is the pepin fast series and its not close but price is way way more too. second would be the snopes nuebell design that can be dropped then would be powerblocks.

rep has a 5-50 set that is very very very good too. prolly the best design but limited on weight.

The Kensui Adjustabells look nice for the handle/plate setup since they don't have the pokey ends and can lie flat

I’ve got the Nuobells that go up to 80#. They work pretty well and are easy to adjust. Definitely cannot drop them though

The Bowflex ones work really well. I use them. Look on FB marketplace for a set.
