First time posting here. I set a life goal three weeks ago. I'm 41, quit smoking two weeks ago (20 year smoker) and have also started watching my diet at the same time. I'm on a 16 week training schedule for the run. I started on the treadmill two weeks ago. I'm at 33 mins for 3 miles right now. The marathon in in March. Is this 13 mile doable for me?

Sure, just stick to your training plan. Check out the running thread (a few threads down from this one) and feel free to jump in and contribute if you want. Ask any questions you have along the way.

Good for you. Yes it’s very doable. Sick to the training plan and you’ll be awesome. Which one are you planning to run??

absolutely

stick to the plan, don't get discouraged if you have a bad run here and there (it happens to all of us), don't stress about times too much, and enjoy the progress you are about to make over the next few months!

Not only is it possible to finish, but depending on your dedication, be competitive.

I quit smoking thanksgiving of last year, started running December 1st, ran an 18 minute 5k 2 weeks ago.

Join the run thread for support, encouragement, and tips. Most of the guys on there really know their stuff.

Yep, just stick to your training. I basically replaced smoking with running 12 years ago. My first half was 4 months after I quit.

Burt - you’ve only been running for a year?

That’s what I was wondering. A 18min 5k is insane for 1 year to training.

Yes. Absolutely. I did my first half marathon last night. 2 hours 8 minutes. Didnt stop the whole 13.1. Beginning of July I had to stop to catch my breath on a casual two mile jog.

As others have said. Just stick to your plan.

Start posting in the marathon thread. Lots of good people posting in it and posting great tips.

Plenty of time. I followed tha Hal Higdon plan to run a half. Once you hit the six mile mark you will know that you have it down. It’s really about building the running muscles. Do t over train, hopefully you are following a similar plan. Shoes make all the difference. I started with a pair of Newton to train me to get more forward in my foot strike. I switched to Saucony Triumph and they made all the difference in the world. Currently running in Hoka Clifton 4.

Yeah, but the fundamentals were already there. I was competitive in high school and one year in college.

I still have contact with my old high school coach too.

i have noticed that part makes a huge difference. when i was up to 240 lbs, i knew i had to make a change. it wasn't easy necessarily, but after i got my lungs and breathing back under control, i knew how to buckle down and train. i was a 100-400m guy and not a long distance runner, but mechanics and form came back after 60 lbs were gone.
