I had a distal bicep tear today while deadlifting. I wasn't even up to my working sets yet when it happened. Really really weird feeling. I was using mixed grip, for what it's worth. Having surgery Friday morning. Anyone with actual experience going through this that can give me recovery advice?

No it really doesn't, but I have it in a tight sling. If I try to straighten it there's some pain, but Motrin and ice are helping big time. Looks weird as hell.

That sucks.

I tore the long head tendon at the shoulder over a year ago. I didn’t choose surgery. It looks funky when I hit a bicep pose, but all of my strength is there and most of my stability.

Damn. Sorry bro. That's a big reason I switched to hook grip.

You probably weren't pulling the slack out.

No I definitely was. I make a habit of resetting and pulling the slack out on every rep 3 plates and up. Just a freak thing I suppose. I was planning on competing this year but that got flushed down the drain.

Mixed grip is getting notorious for this.

Heal up!

Sugery. Get a piece of your arse in your arms.

Good luck though. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

no surgery? Did he tear it at the top, near the shoulder?

For me, I heard it and felt it. Dropped the bar and looked to see my deformed looking bicep.

Ex:(not my arm)

My primary care doc did the "hook test" and confirmed. Orthopaedic surgeon did the same test this morning and agreed.

Hook test:

Going for an MRI this afternoon to determine severity. There is a slight chance I could avoid surgery and still regain full strength.

Pain is still nearly non-existent other than being tender when he poked around today.

Yeah, his tore completely. There was zero question as to what had happened. He had no pain if I remember correctly.

Had if fixed then was back in gym after Dr cleared him. He never showed any hesitation, I was scared for him. He has had zero issues.

Great to hear. My plan is to stay in the gym doing something... lower body, cardio, something. Keep my mind in there.

partially tore mine years ago and then about 2 months later completely tore it. I heard it pop both times. rehab wasn't tough, just started out attempting to straighten out arm until its normally straight. started out curling air then 2 lbs then next lightest weight I could find then 5lbs. eventually curling 10lbs. it seemed about 2 months I was back to normal curling weight - but I didn't rush it.

Yea it looks like it's a really slow process but I'm gonna do my best not to rush anything and cause myself more trouble. Surgery is tomorrow (Tuesday)

good luck, the reason I emphasized straightening the arm, is that while I was still in a sling I met a guy who had the similar surgery and could only straighten his arm about 1/2 way. I think the surgery has drastically improved for example I have a three inch scar on both the front and backside of my arm.
