Thanks. I've read a bunch about the importance of straightening it as soon as you can. Hopefully my years of training will play a big role in getting back right.

I had a distal bicep tear today while deadlifting. Having surgery Friday morning. Anyone with actual experience going through this that can give me recovery advice?

Tore my distal playing rugby a couple years ago. Sucks. You're doing the most important thing, which is getting it repaired quickly. Supposedly if you wait past 2 weeks, the recovery gets tricky.

Do you know which method your surgeon uses? I had the two incision technique and repaired using Arthrex BicepsButton. Got it done by Suri in New Orleans. I didn't have any post surgery side effects and made a full recovery with no reminder of the injury besides the 2 small scars.

Make sure you follow the prescribed physical therapy. Protecting the repair is most important. The surgery is painful (the 2 days after) and you don't want to have to do it again. Follow the doctor and PTs guide for the elbow brace. Always wear it, be careful when you're not.

It will be slow and humiliating at first. Pink dumbbells, then green, then blue, and you'll want to push yourself, but just follow the process. I think I was fully cleared 10 weeks or so after surgery.

Damn. Sorry bro. That's a big reason I switched to hook grip.

damn, I still used mixed. This is stark reminder. I need to learn hook, or just go double overhand with versa grips.
I previously tore my left bicep, and my mixed grip is with the right arm supinated. I'd hate to have a matching set of scars.

Thanks for the great advice! I'm using Dr Brunet at midstate orthopaedic in Alex but no idea which method he uses. I do know he ordered a donor tendon bc he's expecting me to have a good bit of chronic damage from years of power lifting.

interesting. I know there's an issue depending on how far it curls up. I actually have video of mine tearing. It was nuts. I could see my tendon wiggling around my arm. Didn't hurt too much besides the initial hit which was a quick sharp pain.

video of my bicep tear (yeah, i used to fat as frick) (happens at 0:14)

Light reading comparing the single incision and double incision repair techniques

enjoy that oxy (hopefully you got some oxy and not just hydro), but don't get hooked. I felt that aching in my bone where they drilled to put that button for 2 days even while alternating Oxy and Tramadol every couple of hours. It was smooth sailing after that though, just slow.

I got the button too. For those that don't know, this is what they do biceps button
Yea I feel that same bone ache you described but it's not bad. I've taken 3 pain pills total (one at a time) just to help when the nerve block wears off, but it's still there. They had to do 2 nerve block injections bc I have too much muscle mass for 1 to work. Gonna try ibuprofen only today and see how it goes. Overall, the surgeon said everything went well and I can start slight movement after 48 hours.

nice...I got a friend that works for Arthrex, so he's biased, but he swore it was the best method. And like I said I'm nearing 5 years post-op without any side effects, issues or weakness

My Dr said the same thing and he's a 40 year surgeon who was once the Saints team Dr, was Chief of Sports Medicine at Tulane for over 25 years and is on the NFLPA injury panel.

Update for anybody that gives a shite
Just had my first post-op visit and he said nothing heavier than a coffee cup until he sees me 4 weeks from now. Cutting diet and cardio starts tomorrow!

I tore my flexor tendon in my forearm last month and just got back at this past couple weeks and it feels glorious. Glad to hear everything is working out. Good luck. I always tend to push too hard too fast, so I would caution to take it slow at first.

it sucks but worth it in the end. You're gonna be back in no time, just follow the protocol and don't put the repair in danger.

I tore the same thing about 6 years ago. Being fit will definitely help. My recovery time was 1/2 the normal healing time.

Sorry this happened but get on the exercise bike or walk to get the blood pumping as soon as possible.
