Thanks, baw.
Here is what I decided to do to train for the 100-mile ride. I will do this plan for 10 weeks, culminating in a 100-mile ride in early April:
Sunday - weights
Monday - sprint intervals (alternating sprints of high speeds and easy spinning)
Tuesday - run OR moderate distance/speed ride (20 - 40 miles at a comfortable speed) OR crossfit class (depending on how I am feeling and if I need to shake things up a bit)
Wednesday - speed ride (goal is to maintain a faster speed for the duration of a shorter ride)
Thursday - moderate distance ride (see above)
Friday - rest
Saturday - long ride of increasing length
Since I plan to lift on Sundays and I'll have plenty of time as a result, here is what I am going to do in the gym:
Squats - 4 x 10
Deadlifts - 4 x 10
Military press - 4 x 10
Incline dumbbell benchpress - 4 x 10
Dumbbell curls - 4 x 15
Cable tricep pressdowns - 4 x 15
Plank - 6 x 30 - 60+ seconds
Russian twists - 6 x 25 - 50 (each side)
Runs will be simple: 4 - 8 miles at a brisk pace (8:45/mile or so) one week and then a slower pace (10:00/mile or so) the next.
As indicated above, I may sub a moderate distance ride or crossfit class in the place of a scheduled run. I like idea of being flexible. Plus, a good crossfit class will kick ur arse (seabass).
If I cannot ride outdoors, I will do a hard hour on the trainer for a sprint interval or speed ride or a moderate 90 minutes for a moderate distance ride.
I will also stretch, drink at least a gallon of water, and have no more than 6 alcoholic beverages per day.
My goal is to average 17+ mph on the ride. I'd like to get to 18+, but I am not sure I am there yet. My riding partner tends to think I can make it there if I really push myself, which I plan to.

i'll preface this by saying i am a drinker and certainly enjoy a beer or 2 after work....
but you may wanna bring that number down a couple if you're training for an endurance event. 6 drinks a day is alot. that will really mess with your hydration

I gotcha dude.
I guess I should provide a little more information.
I rarely drink during the week. About once per month I will have a glass of wine with dinner or a cocktail on a weeknight.
I do almost all of my drinking on Saturday during the day and at night. Lately, I've been having too many on Saturdays. Nothing in my life is chaotic, but I don't need to be drunk every Saturday, and I have been lately. The six drink limitation was meant to curb binge drinking on weekends.

no worries, definitely not trying to preach about drinking. as i said, i am a drinker.
my point was more around the fact that at some point you may have to decide you're not going to have a drink(s) because it's gonna frick with your training. i've had to do exactly that at times

anybody else doing peloton?
Got started on our new one right before Christmas. Liking it so far. Just playing around on 20-30 minute beginner/advanced beginner classes now. Hoping the live class schedule picks up some now that the holidays are over. I haven't done any of those yet because the times haven't worked out.

My fricking internet went out 40 minutes into the first stage of the Tour de Zwift. I'm so mad I could punch a hole through a wall

I am late to this thread, but are you riding solo or in a group? if you just sit in a group you will have no problem keeping that speed (without getting into watts which is a better measure of effort).
solo, as long as the route is flat and you don't have a fierce headwind go for it. but if you want to ride 100 miles, shite dude just find a gran fondo and sit in.

Group of 2 right now, maybe 3-4 by the time we ride.
I’d love to do a Gran Fondo

Pretty disappointed they made it a fondo and got rid of the race aspect. Will probably due it next year though

didn't realize that. i'm not a big fan of fondos. it's either a race or it's not

Yeah, I guess it makes it easier to put on without having to get the USA license.

It’s definitely still a race but no longer has categories and with the hitters that are going to show up I know I don’t have a chance in hell

Live sessions are fine but they do 5. Minute sessions with live riders fyi. If you pick one of the top few rows under classless and join the session you should have 5-15 riders in there to compete with.
You can also ride with your friends If you know their username.
I’ve enjoyed the hell out of it the last few months.
