I am getting older and have fallen out of a workout routine. Back in my 20’s I did starting strength and got up to 365 for 3 sets of 5 on squat, 415 for a set of 5 on deadlift and then tore my pec benching 265 - which ended the program. Im starting to get back into it and eating a lot cleaner than I did in my 20’s. My concern is the starting strength guys are strong but their physical appearance is not great. I would like to be comfortable with my shirt off and strong at the same time. Is starting strength the way to go or should I be doing a bodybuilding split?

Get down to 15% bodyfat through weightlifting, diet and moderate cardio.

I’ve been on an infinite repeat of PPSA Pool Season for about 3 years at 44.

This program has gotten me stronger than Starting Strength, Stronglifts, etc ever did. Plus I feel better and “look” better than ever. I add to my training maxes every 4wks and my numbers are going up despite not really striving to go heavier these days.

I really wish I’d done a more similar program back in my late 20’s.

start doing PPSA or 531 programming and diet correctly

understand that true starting strength is more about true strength training at all cost for a novice who needs to put on as much muscle as possible to take advantage of the novice phase

if you really want a LP than run greyskull and read the big thread I have on here called gslp a primer.

but my suggestion is easy

pick a ppsa program to run for a month, i suggest starting with the 8 week grasshopper program

walk 10k steps per day

eat 10-12x your bodyweight in calories, assuming you are wanting to lose body fat

eat 150g protein minimal and better if its 1g per lbs of bodyweight

simple, easy and to the point

Starting Strength is great for novice lifters. But Rippetoe is very rigid and dogmatic in his approach to weightlifting.

I did SS for a while. Once the weekly weight increases started slowing down, I switched to a custom program Johnny Pain made for me.

My lifts skyrocketed. My goal was to squat over 405lb, and I met that goal in less than a year. I was doing 410 3x3 with a backoff set of 320lbs at ten reps.

Now I'm doing 531. It has a built in deload week, which I feel like I need since I'm not as young as I used to be.

For your case, you could do something like the Greyskull LP with a bodybuilding split, or 531 using bodybuilding movements as accessory work. I'd stay away from SS if one of your main goals is aesthetics.
