Just fricked up my shoulder majorly. Grade 3 tear. I’ll be seeing a specialist in the coming days.

For those of you that have been here what should I expect? Time in sling? Time to being relatively functional? Real rehab required? Time to regain full range of motion and functionality?

I plan to avoid surgery unless I am unable to be fully functional down the road.

UPDATE:
Ortho appointment today. It was a grade 3 tear. No surgery required and should regain full function 3-6 months. Will have a minor permanent disfigurement (indention in shoulder) but I don’t want surgery to repair that.

He said I can’t do anymore damage so I think I’m done with the sling.

Grade 3 tear? You’re not avoiding surgery.

The recovery pain is worse than the injury pain.

Hopefully not your wiping arm.

Getting dressed/undressed will suck.
Laying in bed will hurt, I suggest a pillow for support under the side being repaired.
Showering/drying off

Biggest thing, if something falls around you, let that shite fall. Fight your natural reflex of trying to catch it. I thought I was healed up n out of the woods till I knocked one of my wifes niknaks over n tried to catch it.. PAIN!

It will hurt. For a long time. I would stand in the shower for 30 min at a time using my fingers to walk my arm up and down the wall under hot water. But it will get better. Surgery is probably unavoidable.

I had SLAP repair surgery on my right shoulder last year. They also had to shave down my clavicle.

Worst shite ever if not for Chip Bankston who was amazing.

My wife is a PT and sent me to Chip. She said he was the best shoulder doc in the state. He was amazing.

12 months after my surgery, Im stronger than I was before.

4 weeks sleeping in a chair.
Had to learn to wipe my arse left handed (got a bidet and said frick it)
Get button up shirts
Smash physical therapy (I had 30 something PT visits)

I dislocated my shoulder in the late 90’s. Tore the socket up pretty bad. Didn’t know how bad until the doc when it.

Was told he would try to repair with scope, if bad he would make a 2-3” incision. Ended up with a 6”+ incision, 2 anchors. And to this day I cannot throw a football or baseball without pain.

Think the procedure the doc performed was a bancart (sp?) repair

I rolled on it playing Pickleball.

Not what I wanted to hear about surgery but hoping I can avoid. There is significant pain (worse this morning) but I have mostly full range of motion it just hurts like hell if I move it.

Already found all my button downs and ordered more. Pulling a sweaty shirt off before a shower was bad. Drying off wasn’t too bad. I haven’t shite yet… it will be an adventure.

I had a grade 3 separation in the 10th grade and don't remember it being that bad. The doc said he could operate or let it heal on it's own. My mom was a single mother and money was tight, so the operation was out of the question.

I was in a sling for a few weeks that held the arm up very high to assist with healing. Never had any PT or rehab and things healed up fine, just have a lump on my shoulder. Maybe being 15 had something to do with the quick healing. The most painful part was at the hospital they made me hold a gallon jug of bleach in each hand for the x-rays. The pain was excruciating.

My buddy in college had the same injury and had it operated on. He has since had multiple surgeries and problems and I never have.

Found this on the internet:
quote:

Most people do well without surgery. The severe injury (Grade 3) can be treated either nonoperatively or operatively. Non-operative treatment involves immobilization in a sling for two to three weeks followed by a course of physiotherapy.
