My son is going to start workouts for high school cross country and he was strongly encouraged to get a watch with a chrono mode. GPS would be great but is not necessary. Any suggestions for a good running watch? Keep in mind that this is a high school kid so I’m not looking to break the bank. Thanks.

Look on amazon for refurbished garmins. Got my Gramin Forerunner 920xt for 199 when retail was 399. Thats a watch that also does swimming and cycling, so not necessary for xc. Pretty much any forerunner will do as a GPS watch. The flagship of the running specific is the 235 if im not mistaken (like 250 new, 170 refurb). But there is the forerunner 25 or something that is sub 100.

Its much nicer to have GPS. I no longer have to map out my distance or guess my pace. I can just run.

The Garmin products I (and my more serious running/tri etc friends) have had are very solid.

You can get one with chrono (and/or at least everything you'd use a chrono for and more--stop watch, pace, elevation gain/loss, HR, and more) for pretty cheap.

Look on Amazon for certified refurb. I've had my refurb vivoactive hr for over a year, and it has been flawless (I swim in mine and wear it daily).

Any decent fitness watch is going to have GPS, and it's nice to have a heartrate monitor. Most serious runners implement some form of HR/VO2 max measurements in their training, so it would be good to have.

I don't know much about this garmin model but it's $111 right now on Amazon. That's pretty cheap.

He should have fun learning how to use it. It's also fun to track your activity and use apps like Strava, where you can compete for segments etc. Those things add a little fun twist to training, for me. The bluetooth sync with phone is key for me.

Eta: what KG6 said. I started typing this before any replies and got distracted.

Thanks to both of you for the great replies. The Forerunner line looks like exactly what he needs and the refurb option was news to me.

Chappy- That’s incredibly generous. Unfortunately, I’m out of state. Thank you though.

If he’s not needing any advanced features the 35 is great.

Not knocking it at all.

The Vivoactive HR is less pretty but has some great features.

Garmin forerunner 235. Great watch for running, and as a running coach I would recommend this for a young runner.
