Questions on SLAP repairs

I’m sure this topic has been broached on here before, so forgive me for not searching too far. Quick backstory. I tore both my labrums the same week in college, had surgery to correct my throwing one, but wasn’t prescribed rehab, and it didn’t really “take.” It was back loose and popping in and out again in less than a year. I’ve been able to deal with it for almost 20 years now, tried PT a few times, had PRP injections, whatever—nothing’s really worked. But the pain has really really started to affect my sleep and my ability to throw with my son.
Are these surgeries so common now, that any competent surgeon is as good as the next? I will drive 500 miles to go to somebody that will do a better job—I’m not trying to save a few bucks. Or even a few thousand. I’m trying to get better. But I would hate to have to go to all the follow ups hundreds of miles away if the guy at my local ortho clinic can do the same thing. I’m in NLA currently. Any advice appreciated.
Also, how long before I can type, ya think? I’m sure I could go back to work after a week or 2, but if I can’t type, I’m not sure what good I’d be able to to.

You should be able to find someone competent enough relatively close to you, but what doctor would not want you to go to rehab after surgery???
All good surgeons know the surgery is only as good as the rehab that follows after surgery

It is a fairly common procedure that most competent surgeons familiar with arthroscopyshould be able to do but I would recommend finding one that is board certified in sports medicine. As previously stated, physical therapy is almost always a part of the treatment. You should be able to start typing as soon as you comfortably feel like it even if you are immobilized in a sling post operatively.

Mine was done by Chip Bankston in BR, he might be hard to get a visit with now. He’s the team doctor for the Saints, Butt he is #1 IMO with the labrum. #2 in BR is Field, he studied under James Andrews and has done the majority of the labrum repairs for LSU baseball players over the years. He’s not much in the personality department, but a great labrum surgeon all the same.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know any doctors back in LA very well. Labral repair should be something most sports med docs can handle pretty easily. Considering your bad experience and the fact you want to get back to throwing, it would probably be worth trying to find a good one though.
At least with your previous experience, you have some questions you can definitely ask in feeling doctors out

Are you in the Shreveport/Bossier area? If so I’d recommend Shane Barton.

I’m in Monroe, but am definitely willing to drive. I’ve heard good things about him and David Googe.

Go to Houston. Dr. Berkman. Incredible surgeon. He's done many pro baseball players. Eric Berkman. He did mine 14 years ago and it's still strong. Rehab is essential!

My employer set up voice to type software (dragon speech) and I was back after a week.

Wound up going to Dr. Barton. His resume is super impressive, and he inspired a lot of confidence at our visit. Procedure was a week ago (8/14). Talked to him right before surgery and his hope was they could do it with no anchors (MRIs can only show so much). I thought, “sweet. Recovery may not be so bad.” Anyway, wound up having to use 5. Oh well. Thanks for the recommendation.

Barton is the man when it comes to the shoulder. I wouldn’t recommend anyone else. You chose wisely.

I’m glad the recommendation worked out for you. A 5 anchor repair is a fairly significant tear. Good luck with the recovery.

Like has been said, find a surgeon with a board cert in sports med. Doctors and surgeons are great at diagnosis, but if it’s not their specialty, they may not give you the best info, just what’s the safest.
ETA: I’ve seen a doc once for some pain I experiencing doing squats. His response: “Well, maybe you should stop weight lifting.” What the frick am I supposed to do with that?

I just had this surgery myself almost 6 months ago.
Was out of work for 3 months to the day. Been back at the gym lifting for about a month now. However there are some exercises I don’t due anymore but other than that life is all good.
ETA DO YOUR EXERCISES! Also push yourself at therapy.
It was stressed to me by others and I’ll do the same for you. I think that was a big reason I was able to come back so quick.
