Question about lifting specific amounts of weight

I injured my shoulder a few days ago doing something stupid, but I though I could go back to lifting after resting it some.
I tried some dumbbell overhead presses today and my left shoulder couldn't get up nearly as much as my right.
Some dude saw me struggling and said as long as the final weight total was the same I would be fine.
Meaning, if I did 5 reps with an 80 pound DB it would be equivalent to doing 10 reps with a 40 pound DB.
I think he's full of crap, but figured I'd ask anyway.
Oh yeah, still going strong on the sobriety, too.

from total tonnage point of view he is right but depends how close each set was to failure.

If you have the sobriety, the gains in the gym will come faster than you realize.

You using 80s for OHP for 5 reps you a Hoss. You can probably do 25 reps with 40s.

Well that's not me.
I was just using that as an example.

An injured shoulder can easily lead to major issues, even surgery. My PT, for a torn rotator cuff surgery, suggested I try other exercises that do not put as much pressure on the shoulder. Like there are numerous different chest exercises, different forms of squats that avoid lots of pressure on the knees.

That reminds me of a question I had about running. If I sprint a mile, jog a mile and walk a mile would that all be pretty close in calories?
The sprinting obviously burns more while active but I’d be walking for much longer.

Yeah but during intense exercise you burn calories long after stopping sprinting.

Yes. I've always understood it as just getting it done quicker is the reward.
