Pushups as replacement for bench press?

So when I started my health/fitness journey whatever you call it I had let my muscles deteriorate and had gained so much weight that I didn't even bother trying to do pushups because I didn't think I'd be able to get more than a couple in if even one at all (sad I know)
Anyway it looks like I can comfortably do some albeit not that many but I'd like to get to where I can do a lot. Mainly because if it can save me a trip to planet fatness it would be a convenient work out that I can do anywhere
Is there some sort of linear progression routine that any of you would recommend for using push ups as a primary chest exercise?

There's an app you can download called 100 pushups I think? It's pretty good for what you're looking for.

I found the website. That looks like it could work for me.
Thanks

I would do both. Read the frequency method in my greyskull thread.

Maybe just “grease the groove” for pushups? Do submax sets a lot over the course of the day. Works for pull-ups.

You can also do variations to make them harder. Dive bombers are a favorite. As you get stronger, invest in a set of rings.

Pushups never hurt anyone, but you want get the strength gains that you would with bench. I would do both. Pushups for muscular endurance, bench for strength.

I'll dive into it when I'm not so busy
I was thinking I could hit that muscle group twice a week. 1 day push ups the other day bench press and supplemental exercises
I'm mainly trying to find a way to be able to work out when it's not as convenient. Been traveling a lot for work.

Death by Pushups is a good workout to do in a hotel.
Basically do the numbers of pushups for each minute you go.
Minute 1 = 1 pushup
Minute 2 = 2 pushups
Minute 3 = 3 pushups
and so forth till you can't do anymore. Eventually you will get where you can't finish the number of pushups within the minute.
Its a good workout to track progress too.

That seems simpler to remember than some convoluted rep scheme
I'll be done in 10 minutes
I'll be done in 10 minutes

That is still 55 pushups.
And try to add a minute each week.
It's a fun, simple workout.
You can add situps too. Just alternate each minute.
If you really want to kill yourself in your hotel room, do Death by Burpees.

I need to do this when I watch tv at night since our place does not do bench, ever. The closest we ever get to it is what we are doing today, Med Ball Bench Press- 5 sets of 10 reps AHAP. We do these maybe 3 times a year.

Never heard of this. Do you do 1 pushup then rest for 58 seconds in minute one then?

Correct.
But don't worry.
It adds up real quick

I need to try this.

I was under the impression that I could just pick up some heavy stuff for an hour a day and be done with it, but boy was I wrong.

I'm sure it works great
I just don't like being told something is simple and being presented with an overwhelming amount of information
If it's simple then it could be stated in a few paragraphs
