Probiotics - do they work?

there is an increasingly endless supply of probiotic options out there these days and its difficult to determine what's best to try. and are these even of any real value? or is this in the same area of the wall of vitamins/supplements that may be a whole lotta meh?
and they have prebiotics on the market too now. how do you keep up with all of this crap and what's truly beneficial for you? I've heard varying degrees of recommendation regarding probiotics from physicians but no specific brand recommendation.

That’s because we still don’t know shite about the microbiome.
The main thing we will learn in the next decade is how little we knew today, which is why I think it’s foolish to go hog wild with any intervention.
Do you have any reason to think you have issues?

frustrating IBS type issues

Try eating Greek yogurt a couple of times per day.

I follow an elimination diet to help with autoimmune issues. IBS issues are typically a response to someone eating a diet that is triggering their immune system. Try eliminating common allergy inducing foods like gluten, soy, dairy, egg whites, and nuts. Look up Whole 30 and stick with it for a month. Then gradually introduce these items one at a time (one every three days) to see what triggers your symptoms. Natural probiotics might be able to help (another poster suggested yogurt) but if the dairy is triggering it, then it might not. This is a very individualized problem, but it can be addressed if you are willing to restrict some foods from your diet.

I would hesitate to call probiotics snake oil, but I am convinced they are largely useless for the average person.
Just go eat some non-fat Greek Yogurt.

can't do yogurt. I have either an allergy or intolerance to milk products that causes me to break out into painful cyst like hives. sucks to be me in general.

I don’t do dairy at all either. I drink kimbucha and eat kimchi daily, but I do it to help colonize a healthy gut biome in general. What really got rid of all of the IBS and leaky gut stuff was only eating 8 hours per day and letting my insides rest for 16. Like a previous poster said though, trial and error elimination is your only other way to find out the source.

What kind of kimchi do you eat? Or do you make your own?

I find they work. I try to get one with 30 million cfu(I think it is?). Whenever my stomach gets out of wack I start using a probiotic along with digestive enzymes.

FWIW, I also have IBS and had a nasty bout of acute colitis after some strong antibiotic treatments a few years back. Of all of the probiotics I've tried over the years, Florastor works best for me. It's a yeast based probiotic whose probiotic strain is actually evidence-based. It's commonly prescribed for patients, especially in nursing homes, for treatment of C.Diff and other gastrointestinal issues. It's made a world of difference for me. And I typically take the max dosage when I take antibiotics and it cuts out any antibiotic-related gastro issues. I'd highly recommend giving it a try.

There’s an Asian grocery store on Lee Dr close to the corner of Highland. They have the best kimchi.IMO It’s way better than anything you find somewhere like Trader Joe’s. Sometimes I’ll do things like Kimchi quesadillas or Kimchi fried rice, but those at both pretty carby meals for my diet. I usually just eat with a fork out of the jar.

I tried a few and the best for me was a liquid from Whole Food.
Works like a champ. Any time my digestive tract gets off for whatever reason, the probiotic does wonders for me. The junk brands didn't do much at all though.
