Been overdoing it eating junk for a while now and was on the verge of being prediabetic. Last two months I have been eating healthy and have been monitoring my blood sugar. I started logging my blood sugar and my average is around 98 which is equivalent to about a 5.0 a1c which is below prediabetes which is good I guess. My only concern is my blood sugar is almost always 100+ in the morning and I dont understand why. It doesnt seem to matter how much or how little I eat or what time, what food, exercise, etc. I dont get it. I feel like during the day my system is working fine based on the numbers during testing. Just in the morning the high readings make no sense to me.

Also wanted to ask what you were able to get your a1c down to if you were in the prediabetes range if you dont mind sharing.

I went from an A1C of 6.8. to 5.5. I lost 35lbs, eat low carb, and exercise. My family doomed me to diabetes, maybe I am just holding it off a while who knows. The thought of being tied to a needle like my dad is enough to make me sacrifice somethings and try to keep it at bay as long as possible.

Most doctors merely screen patients for diabetes with the fasting glucose test. If that test comes back “normal”, they don’t order any more testing. Unfortunately, glucose test alone is not always accurate at picking up a potential blood sugar issue as your body will often compensate by raising insulin levels to control glucose and HbA1c. To catch any issues earlier, check your fasting insulin level. Shoot for fasting insulin below 8, less than 5 is even better.

I have “normal” fasting glucose, usually around 85, but my fasting insulin is higher than I’d like, around 14. It’s really hard to get the insulin down. I check triglycerides and HDL as well, it’s all related. I am trying to be low carb, exercise more. I practice intermittent fasting and it has helped my blood work.

Good luck in your health journey.

There's a glucose sparing effect during a fast, so that can explain am levels.

Get a CGM.

Exercise and cut carbs way down.

Limit fats to non seed/"veg" oil.

OMAD isn't a bad idea but just keep in mind the (adaptive) glucose sparing effect there too.

Again see if your doctor will Rx a CGM.

Simple answer… Dawn phenomenon .

Body releasing the fuel to get you going after you wake up.

But I struggle with this as well. I check my BS a few times a week as diabetes runs rampant in my family. I certainly don’t do it much favor bc i eat like shite and am overweight .

However my Bs is always within goal. Even after a “stress test” of half a pizza for example, 2 hours later it’ll be 110

Never fails my fasting BS first thing in the morning will be 130 or right around that.

Just have to accept it and control what you can

Can't overemphasize this enough. Way more meaningful number.

No. Basically opposite. See the "non" and "to"

In other words eat animal fats and lightly processed other fats high in MUFA like avocado and olive.

Agree. But the CGM gives you some direction.

last bloodwork I did before I decided to turn this shite around:

triglycerides 219 high
cholesterol 205 high
hdl 43.9
ldl 117
a1c 5.6 right on threshold of high

Im going to my regular doctor next month and will have more data with all of the bs testing I have been doing at home. I have a app that I input all the data in included what I have been eating.

since I have started logging the tests in this app my avg blood sugar is 98.1 and calculated a1c is 5.05. The highest I have had 2 hours after meal is 135, which is still in normal range 2-3 hours after eating. It just seems for whatever reason to be high in the morning.

I wish there was a home testing solution for the insulin, but I will ask her to order that test also.

I also met with a dietician to get some extra direction because I had cut out carbs almost completely and was losing weight(im not overweight) but she said not to do that limit to 30-45g per meal and pair with a fat. eat as much meat, green vegetables, and berries as I want.

I knew I was eating bad but because I was never overweight I guess I thought I was ok. I think I was just overloading my system with trash food and hope that I can get everything back to normal and also that I can stay on the right track diet wise.

Also, I dont recall anyone on either side of my family ever having diabetes, so I dont think I would have any genetics leaning that way.

38% of adults in the US have prediabetes.

Eat alot of carbs, sugar, and soda and you can be in that number also. throw in alcohol also. When you get older it catches up with you. Even younger people that are obese probably in the same boat.

quote:

Diabetes Total:
37.3 million people have diabetes (11.3% of the US population)
Diagnosed: 28.7 million people, including 28.5 million adults
Undiagnosed: 8.5 million people (23.0% of adults are undiagnosed)

Prediabetes Total:
96 million people aged 18 years or older have prediabetes (38.0% of the adult US population)
65 years or older: 26.4 million people aged 65 years or older (48.8%) have prediabetes

Yeah, I don’t get it. If I was about to be on insulin pumps or dialysis, I think I’d eat chicken breasts and veggies the rest of my life. Who the frick wants to live like that?

I havent drank soda in years. For me it was carbs and sweets. And im not the typical fatass. I guarantee you nobody would look at me and guess I was heading toward diabetes.

Its gonna be a huge problem in the US with all the processed shite, fast food, sugar, corn syrup, etc. Look at the stats I posted. Nearly half of all american adults are prediabetic. I was right on the cusp of being in that number before I decided to change.

If she won’t order, know that there are independent labs and you can order your own, depending on where you live. They don’t take insurance that I am aware of but allows you to test what you want to test without pushback from a Dr or your Ins Co and some of the testing is very reasonable. The company I use sends me to Quest lab for the draw, but it’s not thru Quest lab direct. Fasting insulin is $12.95 + draw fee. (I would link here but I’m not sure if I can do that without violating any site rules.)

For example, when my Dr ordered VitD levels, my Ins Co denied it and made me pay $99 for that test. It’s $30 if I order same test independently.

Also, add more Omega 3 through food if you can to get HDL up. If you want a supplement look for one with high DHA. You are getting good advice on this thread to avoid seed oils, PUFAs.
