What’s yalls resting HRs? Mine has always been pretty low. Usually it’s about 39-40 right now and I haven’t even been training that hard, so curious if it will drop as I get closer to race day.

It was crazy to see the HR drop though. I've bonked before, but not with a HR monitor. I've read it will crash and that's exactly what it did. Then when I started walking, it shot back up again after a few minutes. All corresponding with that nasty feeling coming and going.

That doesn't sound fun. I've certainly bonked before. Last year it was 100 degrees on day in MT and I ran 14 and proceeded to puke bile and water. Total brick wall shut down. But I don't recall heart rate dropping. I was too busy puking from what was probably heat exhaustion.

I'll do that next year if my knees and such hold up until then. Only 2200 ft gain over 50k would be a nice first ultra for me. Have you done it before?

I would like to parlay this marathon training into my first actual 50k this spring.

There are several in Arkansas that I’ve looked at in the past.

I’ve ran 50k unsupported before, just not in a race.

In the 60s. When I run it will go to 170s or so. Been a few years since I checked it while running though.

My resting is around 45 when In shape. Don't really pay attention otherwise.

Just measured mine at 60. Charts, etc claim my max to be 183. No idea if this is true or not, I need to measure it. May do that this week. My VO2 max according to Polar is 56. Not sure how accurate this is either. I’d imagine a gadget on my wrist isn’t too good of a measure.

This will be my 1st ultra (road or ultra). I did the Beast trail race in May. But only managed 4 laps. I needed probably 15 more minutes in order to get credit for the 5th lap (6 hour cutoff). That was suppose to be my 1st ultra.

I picked that 50k because I have friends there still. I lived in the area after college. It is also is recommended for 1st timers. I was really just looking for a no frills kinda race. I had done the half ironman and half marathon and big city marathon thing for so long, it just became too much hoopla.
Switching my mindset to ultra running has been fun.

Springing off the ultra conversation:

Do y’all follow any runners on Instagram? I’ve really enjoyed following @Tommy_Rivs and @Ian.Morgan, two ultra marathon competitors who are living the life I’d live if I could do it all over again. I wasn’t really interested in running an ultra until I saw the breathtaking mountains those guys climb while training.

Excellent. Augusta is midway ish between us and in-laws in Columbia so it's a great location for a beginner ultra. I'm totally in for next year w a one year old in tow.

I follow Rivs and Walmsley. Those guys are living the dream indeed. Flagstaff seems like an Ultra Runners paradise.

Apparently Leadville CO too. You start your daily run at 10k feet. Damn.

I follow a bunch of ultra guys

Tony Kupricka
Joe Grant
Dylan Bowman
Walmsey
Killian (GOAT)
Timmy Olson
Mike Foote
Dakota Jones
Dom Grossman
Rickey Gates
Billy Yang (also has a good podcast)
Geoff Roes
Mike Wolfe

Tony Kupricka has been my favorite for a long time, although he doesn’t really run anymore due to injuries.

Walmsley is America’s best chance at ever beating Killian.

Spent a week there. Wasn’t a runner at the time but would love to go back in retrospect.

Cool but not brutal winters, and glorious summers and only an hour and a half from the canyon

Also as an update, didn’t have my best week out in east Texas. Ate like crap, had low and slow miles. But a good week to refresh with the family. Also had a camp game that I chose not to run in leiu of which involves trying to chase down college age and HS kids. Still got it for the most part.

Back in the saddle tomorrow morning.

I do a lot of treadmill runs during the summer (3pm in NOLA is no joke), so I watch youtube videos by The Ginger Runner, Fulltiltward, Billy Yang and Ulta Trail videoes.

Walmsley's performance at WS was unreal. Temp high of 97 and still set the record.

Well, ended up running a lot faster today than I originally planned. Mostly was trying to beat the rain that was going to move in, but felt pretty great also.

Had planned on about 9:10 pace but ran 9 miles at 8:12 pace (last 3 miles under 8 minutes)

Started raining as I hit my driveway getting home!

Nice pace! My legs are sore from my mountain laps yesterday. I wanted to do a long slow run this evening but may rest. May go swim.

I was scheduled to run 7 miles this morning but my BIL and his wife came in last night and we stayed up way too late visiting.

I would have needed to get up at 4 am if I wanted to get a run in since my daughter was doing her first kids tri this morning and there was no way I was going to miss cheering her on. She did fantastic!
