Nerve Pain in 4th Toe

Between running and high heels, I’ve messed something up in my toe. After researching it looks like it’s a nerve - I think it’s called Morton’s Neuroma or something. Anyone familiar with this?
Also, anyone have a podiatrist in BR that they trust? This pain cannot continue!

I had something similar and the pain radiated from my toe to my heel. Thought maybe I had a stress fracture. Urgent care doctor x-rayed it and didn’t find anything. So, he suspected that I just irritated a nerve. It was very painful. It took about 6 weeks of resting it and ibuprofen before it healed.

Thank you. Six weeks of rest feels like a lifetime.

One of the Halls (father and son) at the Bone and Joint clinic in BR.
First line of treatment is typically a steroid shot. Sometimes multiple steroid shots are required. Sometimes a series of alcohol sclerosing injections are done. Rarely, surgery is required.
Make sure you're wearing shoes that are wide enough in the toe box area. Anything that squeezes the foot will cause increased pressure in thr nerve.
I'm a podiatrist, so I'm not webmding this info.

What are the odds that she has arthritis and not a nerve issue? I had pain the big toe for a while and it turned out that even under 50 years old I had an advanced case of arthritis.

Thank you. I’ve been very careful to avoid pointy shoes. I run in Brooks and i thought they had a wider toe box, but i may have to re-evaluate.
One thing that has made me think is that I’ve started wearing “feetures” socks to run and now in winter shoes (so more often now than in summer). They are tighter on my feet and do contour the foot and promote arch support. I wonder if the socks are making it worse? Any thoughts on that?

The Halls are great guys, I’m good friends with Christian, the ENT.
If you go see Seth Kaplan at BRPT Lake though he can definitely diagnose how you’re getting that pain. He’s the best “run diagnostician” in town.

Very slim in a lesser toe. Hallux limitus is the fancy term for arthritis in your big toe joint. It's very common. I've had to do surgery on people as young as late 30's for it.

Fourth toe
Can you specify which this is? From the small toe or the big toe, counting? Is that toe longer than the toes next to it? I have a slightly longer toe that gets beat up a little...I do have to go out of my way to make sure the nail is trimmed. That would bump it more often.

4th toe from my big toe. It’s shorter than the 3rd toe from my big toe, but longer than my pinky toe. My 4th toes are shaped kind of wonky, so i don’t doubt that has something to do with it.

Morton’s neuroma most commonly occurs between the third and fourth metatarsal. If it is not that advanced footwear modification and a steroid shot may be all you need. Mine was very advanced. I ran for years with the pain because I didn’t know what it was. I thought it would go away eventually like my other foot problems. I made horrible footwear choices too. Asics that were too small and had a very narrow toe box. I did see Patrick Hall and he is a great guy. I did the whole sequence of footwear modification, steroid shot, and a series of alcohol shots to ablate the nerve. It only became more angry. I ended up where I started with doctors, G. Michael Blanchard foot and ankle specialist at BR ortho. I had surgery and I was running 6 weeks later. I don’t even think about now. Good luck with whatever route you choose.
