I’ve been using protein drinks to add muscle mass as I age. It’s working.

My mixture is half whey and half casein.

The problem is that this high protein diet is leaving me — unmoved. Usually you can set the atomic clock by my bathroom routine. No more. And this morning my, shall we say process of elimination yielded something about the weight, density, and malleability of a gold ingot.

Can I just mix in some clean fiber with my shake? Any advice on proportions?

Just throw some Metamucil in there. I used to blend dry steel cut oats into my protein shakes. Either should work.

Yep. I usually do an overnight oats thing for breakfast anyways. I think I do 40g oats, 1 scoop protein powder, around 112 g fairlife fat free milk, 12g chia seeds, and 70g frozen fruit. Sometimes I'll throw in ~8g pb fit. Has me as regular as I have ever been

I mix fiber with my protein shakes. Also make rolled oat/cottage cheese/egg pancakes and eat wraps using high fiber pita bread.

Gotta have fiber if consuming a lot of protein or things will get unpleasant quick.

Sounds magical!

I'm curious, are you consuming these protein drinks or are you using them as resistance during exercise?
If you're just consuming them, and adding muscle mass without working out, please let us know what brand.
Thanks!

You forgot the ", dumbass."

Of course I am hitting the gym. I do one day of upper body, one day of lower body, and one day of core. I have a program designed for me that uses enough weight to work to almost failure on the last rep.

As you may know, or maybe you don't, you don't gain as much as you get older, and your body is less efficient at using the protein you intake.

Now, do you have anything real to offer?

Psyllium Husk. It is the fiber in Metamucil. Sorta of a slight earthy taste if taken alone. Also a natural thickener.

Cheap and easy. Start with a tsp and work your way up to a tbsl, then beyond. That easy.

Tablespoon is 30 cal, 7g fiber and 1 carb. Taken at the same time each morning and you can plan your bathroom trip in the future pretty easy.

You started this. You don't gain as much when you have a shitty workout program. Protein doesn't fix anything with a shitty workout program.

If a regular morning BM is what you're looking for, take the fiber at night before bed. If you are more targeting the fiber as an appetite suppressant, take it in the morning. Or, take one scoop in the morning and one in the evening before bed.

That being said, protein shakes are depressing. The tiny bit of satisfaction that comes from it would be any sort of anything that tastes decent. I would not add anything to it to change it if it tasted good.

100 percent.

Any particular program you recommend for someone in early 60s?

I want to build muscle and drop about another 20 of fat.

Three days on resistance with free weights mostly. Three days on the bike (45-60 minutes). Stretching every workout day. One day full rest.

Diet is low carb and high protein, using whey and casein. Also eat a lot of vegetables and some fruits.

The older you get the better it is to 1 rep max many of your sets. Being old and doing anything over 2-3 reps is detrimental to your recovery. For example, if you typically do 10 reps of the 25s for biceps, just grab the 45s and go as hard as you can to get 1 rep. Gerald Oswald has good info on this.
