Many options out there for martial arts classes

Look to find some self-defense class for this summer. Seems like a ton of different styles are available in my area: jui jitsu, judo, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, karate, taikwando, hapkido, Wing chun, etc...
So how do I pick one over the rest? Lots of different opinions on which is best. It’s confusing comparing when I know nothing. Something practical that could work on the street is what I’m really after (not in it for tournaments and stuff)

Jui-Jitsu and Muay Thai or boxing are the most practical outside of wrestling(which is not really a sport for a grown man to learn). I’d look at UFC Gym and start at the entry level and work your way up. My buddy, Gabe Miller, owns the place and is skilled at all 3. Plus, he a lot of great instructors who are all vetted fighters.

Krav Maga might be the most violent and best option based on the research I have done for hand to hand defense.
Personally I decided to get my concealed handgun license and hope like hell I don't have to use it.

This was one of top choices to train at, but unfortunately there is not one located in my area

Krav looks like the most different from all the ones I listed, probably because it is military based. It also looks like the training will result in many bruises
I have a CWP, it's only most places I'd carry are forbidden because they are either school grounds, or places I'd be drinking beer at

Krav Maga is probably the best. It’s all about fast, brutal violence. Like the real world. The trick is to make sure that your instructor isn’t some full of shite moron. I would ask your police officers where they go. Many of them go get extended training after the academy with local guys.

Best Self Defense:
1. Concealed Carry and learn how to shoot.
2. Learn to run fast so you can run away.
3. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
4. Learn how to Strike. Muay Thai being optimal. But a good boxing gym is sometimes your best local option.

Find a bjj school near you that does no gi. That is the most practical. All fights end up on the ground

I am not disagreeing with you as those disciplines are extremely useful, but Krav Maga is also very practical. But I agree, can’t go wrong with an MMA gym around town.

Krav Maga is probably the most effective and requires the least amount of athletic skill. It’s about winning the fight. That’s it. It’s knees to the groin, palm strikes, shots to the throat. Brutal and to the point. There’s a reason why the Isreali military teaches it to all their soldiers.

While I respect Krav Magra and have trained with some of the best when I was in Israel, if you try it against people who have more practical fighting skills as wrestling BJJ, or boxing/muay Thai you’ll just look like a dumb arse. Sorry, not to insult but it’s the truth. Now if you’re getting mugged by 3 big guys with guns Krav Magra will give a .002% chance of survival rather than a .001% chance, but that’s it. And the dudes who are good enough at it or it to be practical have spent a decade training it, along with the other practical martial arts.

Ok, so I managed to find a reputable gym that offers both BJJ and MT. With a monthly pass (~$300) I can attend unlimited classes in both disciplines. That seems like the consensus way to go about it.
I will try and go to 1 class a day for an entire month and if I need more then I can extend it to two months. A couple months this summer are the only time this year my schedule will allow for something like this

$300/month? I’ll just stick to boxing and hope no one that knows advanced fighting techniques wants to beat my arse.

I took Krav Maga for about a year and I loved it. I learned a lot and the classes are a hell of a workout.
I quit because I moved offices and the Krav gym isn't convenient for me anymore, but I highly recommend it.

Something practical that works on the street is simple. Boxing with about a 2 Stripe White Belt level of skill in BJJ. If you find a Helio Gracie BJJ school, then you are golden because we throw standup into our curriculum but just enough to get you out of a jam.
You can probably get past 99.9% of anybody you encounter on the street with those skills unless you run into a MMA fighter or Golden Gloves ace, then you are fricked.
