annual today, blood work came back after i left doc's office. i took a peak at my results. please help me interpret until i can speak with my doc.

Cholesterol, Total 227 mg/dL 140 - 200 mg/dL (out of range)

Triglycerides 43 mg/dL 35 - 150 mg/dL

HDL 68 mg/dL >45 mg/dL

LDL Calculated 150 60 - 135 (out of range)

Total Chol / HDL Ratio 3.34 0.00 - 4.98

i have lost about 15 pounds since earlier this year. i feel better than i have felt in a very long time, both physically and mentally. i work out 4 days a week.

any concerns with the numbers i have posted? google says i have high cholesterol, but i also know that my normal may not be someone's else normal. high cholesterol does run in my family. am i really that "high?"

to end on a positive note, what are some positives with my scores?

i am oblivious when it comes to this. i just show up annually to get checked. last year, for reference, my cholesterol was 199 with the range being from 140 - 200 as acceptable. and my ldl last year was 123 with the range being from 60 - 135 as acceptable. my tryglcerides last year were 65 and now they are 43.

also are there any supplements i could look at taking? fish oil? anything else?

yes, they appear to be. i read a few other things on here by using a search to try and help me understand if my LDL and cholesterol are truly out of whack. i'm going to take the advice of my doctor but am curious as to the opinion of the board, even if we aren't all medical professionals.

i feel great, but i also don't want this to be a silent killer for me either.

Ask your Dr about having a Calcium Density CT scan done. It might help in determining your risk of blockages

I don’t think you have any issues. Not all LDL is bad. If you doctor recommends a statin I would question that and ask for a LDL-P test to look at particle size because you likely don’t have the bad LDL based on your triglycerides and HDL.

THIS! With Triglycerides that low, your LDL is most likely type 1 (light and fluffy). LDL and all cholesterol are just transports. The presence of a lot of LDL in the blood means, your body is doing its job.

I didn't see your age. It may be a good idea to have a calcium score and have your arteries scanned. However, with those numbers, I would be shocked if you had any plaquing.
Congrats on the weight loss. Do anything you can to avoid statins.

your Triglycerides are good. Mine are about 10x that.

Dr. Pepper will be the death of me, and soon if I can't get mine down.

Why is this? I’m certainly no expert, but I’ve actually read where some doctors think everybody over 40 should be on statins.I know that’s not anywhere near the consensus, but what would be the benefits amd the risks.

I just got on the lowest dose cholesterol meds and mine was 220. I’m not overweight and exercise almost 2 hours a day. It’s definitely genetic.

My levels are slightly lower than yours, I’m in my 30’s, thin, and just got put on the lowest dose statin. Weird.

Your LDL is fine as long as you don't have issues with glucose metabolism. If you have diabetes or pre diabetes then it can cause blockage of arteries. It is also important to find out if you have Type A or B LDL's. Type A are the fluffy ones and Type B are the small dense ones. The small dense ones are the ones that get stuck in arteries. You can determine which ones you have with either a NMR Lipoprotein test by Quest or a Subractionated Lipo panel by Labcorp.
