Lifting with a Torn Rotator Cuff
Posted by Dannunzio on 8/23/21 at 10:06 pm00
I’m 43 and have been back in the gym for the last 2 years. I lost 80 lbs and literally every aspect of my life has improved. My 2 hours in the gym every evening is something I look forward to and love. My problem is, my right rotator cuff is torn to shite. I can pull all day long, but I cannot incline bench press, overhead press, do pull-ups, dips, lateral raises, etc I can flat bench, and pretty much every other compound lift. I have to use a special bar to squat (has handles that come down in front, don’t know what it’s called) but that’s no big deal.
The pain is getting worse. Not unbearable yet, but waking me up at night occasionally.
Surgery is looking like something I need to consider. To those who have had rotator cuff surgery, how long were you out? What can I expect? Will I ever be able to do the exercises I can’t do currently? Should I just say frick it and keep getting after it?

I tore my right rotator cuff in 2015 then again in 2016.
Surgery went well and therapy is a bitch. Don’t try shortcuts and don’t rush back to regular activity.
In my case, rotator cuff will never be the same. Strength, movement.

No, don’t push through the injury. The more you aggravate it, the harder it will be to recover. You can still lift, but stay away from things that put the shoulder in a compromised position. That includes squats. If you have an SSB, squat with that. Do exercises that you can do pain free. You should really see your doctor. I don’t think a torn rotator cuff is something you want to mess around with.
If its affecting your sleep its time to get it checked out. Mine was a bitch. Post surgery was extremely painful for a week and then therapy was no cakewalk. It took 6-8 months for me to get back to 80% lifting. And about a year to get to 100%. But keep in mind its different for everybody. People I know didnt have nearly the pain or recovery period I had.

Had surgery to repair mine a week ago. The PT gave me a timeline of 1/22 to start lifting again normally. Surgery it rough for a week. The ice sleeve is a lifesaver.
I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder in 2013 and it took about 4 months after surgery and rehab to start to feel like normal.
The initial PT appointments were eye opening with some pain but a huge lack of motion that took a pretty good while to get back, and then it was all about building strength in the joint.

If Rot cuff is beyond repair, you're looking at a reverse shoulder arthroplasty. 4 weeks in sling then Minimum 3 months physical therapy 3 days a week, then released to return to work. Takes one year for true full recovery and movement.
Get the best shoulder surgeon you can. Look at Martin DeGravelle North Louisiana orthopedics. He did mine.
