I always squat and deadlift barefoot, but I was talking to a buddy at the gym and he was talking about the power lifting shoes making a fairly noticeable difference. What yall say? Is it more of a mental thing or do they help increase what you can lift?

Romaleos make a big difference, but I mainly just use metcons for ease of use.

It depends. I have Romaleos, and they make knee travel in high bar or front squat mucj easier.

They aren't good for low bar squatting. They pitch me forward too much in the hole. You don't want to use them for deads due to the heel.

I use Chuck Taylors for deads and low bar squats and they work well.

I wear lifting shoes every time I lift. They do help. I wear the Nike Romaleos 3. I prefer the 2’s but I haven’t had problems with the 3’s. I find that they help you maintain form while doing squats and olympic lifts. You’re not supposed to wear them during deadlift, but I do. They will not make you “stronger,” but they help correct form which improves your numbers. But, you can have all the fancy gear you want, it you can’t lift with good form, it doesn’t matter.

My squat is between low and high and I tend to favor leaning forward as it is, so that's a big turn off. Preciate the info fellas. Think I'm gonna stick to barefeet and throw on the chucks if the workers fuss

I would wear the chucks. Bare feet in the gym is not a great idea.

That style sounds similar to mine and why the Romaleos throw me off. I have to use hip depth and opening to get to depth. The Romaleos give me trouble sitting back with my hips just based on balance.

I've been doing 3rd world squats as a stretch to have more flexibility in my hip flexors and to train myself to sit back on my heels and I feel like since I've been doing that, I have more drive out of the hole.

For high bar, front squats, overhead movements, and weightlifting, they are great. For powerlifting movements they are not.

I have adipowers and wear them all the time when not doing deadlift or low bar.

I'm probably in the minority but I will actually wear my lifting shoes squatting. I love the stability they provide. I don't wear them for deadlifts. I deadlift barefoot.

I've found Vans to be the best, I like the wider base vs Chucks

There's nothing weird about that. Heeled shoes are pretty beneficial for high bar. Even though I don't like them low bar, they definitely help me high bar.

Low bar is a different animal because it requires your torso to be much more angled. The heels really pitch me forward with that angle.

If I only did high bar, SSB or front squats, I'd wear my Romaleos all the time.
