Life after double bypass.

Are you overweight? Family history of heart disease?

My dad had a quadruple bypass in 2007 and is still here. The doctors that do these things are lifesavers and they do it every day. The worst part of the recovery for him was the rib pain. When dad got home he used a pillow wedge to sleep because it was more comfortable and was the only way he'd get some rest. He also used the big heart shape pillow they gave him at the hospital to hold onto if he needed to laugh, cough, sneeze, etc.

If you're unhealthy now, be prepared to make changes after your recovery. The bypass doesn't fix the blockage, and it 100% will come back in the bypass artery if you don't address it. Your cardiologist will probably put you on meds for the rest of your life. Dad had another heart attack 12 years after the bypass, which required a stent. So it's not an "if," but "when," you'll have issues again if you don't make some changes.

The bypass should improve things for you, that's why they do it. Take advantage. Pick up a workout hobby (tennis, walking, something) when you are cleared and make the most of it.

She's still going strong at 71. She's on a handful of heart medicines and she changed her lifestyle completely. Hasn't had a cigarette, diet changed dramatically, pretty much stopped working (which was no problem financially) since. I don't even want to think of the medical bills but insurance covered the majority of it. She sees the cardiologist regularly and every new medication she's prescribed has to be approved by him if I remember correctly. Best of luck, it's not a death sentence and she's had more than 10 stints since then.

Don't over do it. That seems to be one of the biggest problems now. BP surgery will make you better than you were before the surgery. Recovery is way easier than what you would think. Lots of improvements from years past.
