Knee pain during squats

I've been experiencing some right knee pain when doing squats. It's not every time but when it happens, my leg almost buckles. If I'm doing a set of 12, it'll happen on the 5-6 rep and then I take a pause (with the weight still on my back) and keep going and that usually makes it to where I can finish my set. I'm not pushing a ton of weight and it doesn't happen every time. Anyone have any experience with this? It doesn't feel serious enough to go to the doctor at this point but maybe I need to do some more stretching/mobility before I do my squats

dude, if your knee is giving out at times, please stop doing squats until you identify the issue. that is not a good sign. your set of 12 is not worth it.

It isn't giving out. I just feel some pain for a rep or 2 and it goes away

I partially tore my meniscus playing football in high school and never got it fixed. It gets tight sometimes when running but I’ll also get pain when squatting maybe 25% of the time. I just power through it. You should probably see a doctor to make sure it’s not something more serious like a ligament.

I never really feel any tightness. It's just a pain when I'm coming out of the squat but it never lasts. I worked out this morning and it happened but my knee feels fine right now.

How wide is your stance? I've been squatting for years but that said, I would not consider myself an expert on the subject by any stretch. Anyway, a few months ago I started getting bad pain in my left knee when squatting and found that bringing my stance in a bit more narrow fixed it. I think I had just steadily gotten wider and wider over the years and was putting too much stress on my knees.

Shoulder width or maybe half a foots width wider. My toes point out slightly as well.

Are you focusing on keeping your knees out when growing through the lift? People can experience knee pain if they aren’t trying to keep their knees out and they rotate in.

start doing mobility work for sure.
besides just mobility before just to loosen up, I highly suggest doing the following to make sure you are priming the knees to perform the work
- tib raises
- deep calf raises with a 10 sec stretch at the bottom
- hamstring work
- glute work
you dont have to get crazy with it, just get a little pump going. I use bodyweight for all of them. I also perform very slow and deep squats and sissy squats or KOT split squats with just bodyweight to ensure the knees are warmed and primed for the heavy work.
Sure you may have to take a step back and rebuild, but you will get used to the extra volume soon enough.

Where is the pain located? This should be the 1st question asked. Anterior, Posterior, Medial?

The inside of my knee cap, right on that dimple. So looking down at my right knee, the left side on that dimple.

So looking at the pic, where the line is pointing to Articular cartilage? Does the pain occur when going down or coming up?

Yeah I would was the articular cartilage.
It occurs when coming up.

Does it feel like something is catching, popping, gritty, etc..... and you have no swelling or tenderness? You stated earlier that your knee gives out or it just hurts? Finally, this only happens when you squat periodically?

Nothing like that. Just a pain when coming up from the squat. No rubbing sensation, catch, or popping. It's kind of like someone took a stick or something and is pushing it into that area of my knee.
I just did some deep squats in my office and I notice it at the bottom of the squat and during the upward motion. With it just being body weight, I notice that there is something going on but I wouldn't even call it pain, more like a slight discomfort. It could be the MCL but I have no real way of telling. It's basically the inside area of my knee.

none

I wouldn't say it gives out, rather I just notice the pain and it makes finishing the lift difficult. It has yet to cause me to not complete a lift, but I will take some load off that leg when I notice it. For instance, it happened today during my 2nd set and I took a longer rest between sets and on the 3rd set, the pain wasn't nearly as bad and I only noticed it during a few reps.

Correct.

In my opinion, I would say you have a slight tear in your meniscus. The axial loading compressing the body more than likely irritates it after a set or 2 and leads to the knee giving out and the dull pain afterwards. If it was your MCL you would have your knee randomly giving out on you. I am not a doctor and this is merely my opinion. As always you should seek the advice of a medical professional.

I would assume the treatment would be rest?

10-4...that is not happening.

I have a friend that is a PA for a sports orthopedic doctor. I'll be giving him a call shortly.

just follow the ATG knees over toes program for 3-6 months and watch how much better you feel. just saying.
