Anyone interested in cutting refined sugar from their diet for the next (at least) 30 days?

Today marks day one for me to avoid processed sugar in any form. I’ve tried to do this numerous times in my life with little sustained success.

However, this is the first time in my life that I have both aerobic conditioning and physical strength on my side. If there’s ever been a time for me to develop a healthy, attractive physique, the time is now.

I eat a mostly healthy diet - 100+ grams of protein, higher fat than carbs, high quality meats and lots of vegetables.

But I ruin it and have ruined it by consuming around 500 extra calories of sweets per day. That’s an average day. Holidays, football games, because-it’s-Monday, or whatever reason could easily send it to 1000+ calories of sweets per day.

My diet going forward will be mostly a paleo-type diet but I’ll consume pasta, tortillas, oatmeal, and English muffins occasionally. But ultimately, my goal is to stop with the sweets and desserts and focus on building a body.

I’d love for others to join me that are struggling with sugar addiction or poor eating choices. This isn’t necessarily a diet thread or a keto-type thing or even a weight loss thread - it’s about sugar and how it’s time to stop eating like children.

Can’t promise I’ll update daily but I’ll commit to this thread if others do.

Day One - no sugar

I am low carb. Low sugar. I have diabetes. I got my sugar under control in a week. Consistent between 80-90.

This is day 45 of my life changing diagnosis and lifestyle change.

I work out 4-5 days a week.

I’ve dropped 40lbs. I’ve got 80 to go to be down to 220.

I never thought I would be able to do it but it can be done.

Develop a routine of foods. Stick to your plan. Workout. I just walk 35 minutes on incline and up. I do as much stair master as I can.

43 days. 40 pounds. Going to reverse the diabetes by May my doctor says. Caught early. Doing something about it.

Awesome to hear. Wish I could get my father on board with you. He’s 61, 5’8 240, and has diabetes.

You got to make a decision whether you want to live. It’s that basic. Sugar is going to kill you, everyone needs to understand that.

Forget diabetes, it’s linked to heart disease and other issues. Understand that living is more than what you’re eating.

I’m pretty militant but you can make adjustments. You can a cheat meal but in balance.

An example of my dinner is fresh baked salmon with black pepper, little Tony’s and lemon wedges. Baked Side of mushrooms and asparagus. Probably my wife and I favorite meal.

I eat a lot of salad and vegetables. Grilled chicken. Cut cheese and croutons/bread. Dressing in moderation. Think half of what you would put. Then just temper down to light coating.

Also, once you go low sugar you may find your eye sight changing because the foods you eating are changing. Need to supplement with a multi vitamin. Come to find out I didn’t have enough of some vitamins. Started taking that and back to old prescription in three days.

I just finished day 4 of no processed foods or Diet Coke. Well, “no” is a fine line; I did use a teaspoon of strawberry preserves to make a vinegarette for a spinach salad and had some vanilla Greek yogurt on the run at 7-11. But, honestly, it hasn’t been crazy tough. Just 1) make sure you have a plan for the day, don’t try to wing it because you’ll get caught in a tough spot on the road and 2) be prepared to hit the grocery store a few days a week. I drink either water or fresh brewed unsweetened green tea only. I’ve been reading Tony Gonzales’s All Pro Diet book. It’s not too crazy, just getting back to basic foods. I’m down 5 pounds already. I have been to the gym each day for about a 40 minute workout- weights and exercise, not aerobic. One day at a time..

Mind if u ask why you cut the cheese out?

I had genetic testing with a shite ton of bloodwork — o have the MTHFR gene and carbs are basically not broken down and my homocysteine level was up. That said, another test (can’t remember name) said that my body can handle fat more than most people.

So why did you cut the cheese out??

I went to a medical weight loss clinic when I started. I was given the diagnosis of diabetes and no idea what I was going to do. These doctors don’t exactly specialize in nutrition.

I spoke with my father who has diabetes (long history) and told me that what they going to tell you at diabetes education going to kill you and you’re never going to be able to get your sugar down. I went anyway and he was right. Want me to eat carbs, bread, etc. Their approach to diabetes is disease management, not solving the problem which is you’re a fat arse and that’s why you’re here.

So I went to the clinic for help. I figured they’d help me with practical advice. They explained that low carb and low sugar was the goal. Cheese wasn’t good fat and all cheese was not created equal. To avoid confusion, they advised their clients to cut it completely from salad along with bread.

I haven’t really questioned it because I’m kind of new to this and just really getting into fitness. Which right now I’m in Trauma Level 2, trying to get to being being healthy and stable. Once I reach my goals, I’m sure I’ll moderate it back into my diet. I’m not really one to give you concrete advice on nutrition though. Just what they told me.

Well I expected it, but I slept like shite last night. Usually happens when I try to cut out sugar or carbs. I hit the bed and suddenly feel wired. When I do fall asleep, it’s restless and I wake up really thirsty throughout the night.

I guess those are my initial withdrawal symptoms. I’m preparing myself for a few more days of bad sleep which will lead to me feeling tired and groggy. A lot harder to persevere when I’m tired and groggy but here’s to it.

I'm in. Im back on the Keto wagon. I gained 10lbs from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Today is day 2 and I feel better.

Also, I'm giving up alcohol during the week. I usually have a drink or 3 a night. It's time to finish my weight loss goals and get into maintenance mode

I was waiting until tonight to update, but good to see others here.

I’m on day four. I’ve already noticed significantly less “puffiness” in my midsection and chest. Bloating has gone down.

No superpowers yet.

I’m starting to think about the next phase of this though. Originally thought about cutting just sweets, but I’m still averaging 30g of sugar over the past three days. That’s from fruit, vegetables, and breads. I’d like to cut that down even further.

Not going full Keto or super low carb, but I think I’m going to try for less than 10g of sugar per day.

I would just try to cut out all sugar as there's no real difference.

I almost never eat refined sugar except for maltodextrin post-workout. My battle has always been with carbs - pizza, sandwiches, pasta. I go back and forth with eating clean and then cooking pizza, so I feel your pain.

Best of luck to you. The first week is the toughest. If you can make it a month, it will feel much more natural.

All y’all sound like my mom.
But i will do what she suggested to me even though i already lift weights and swim.
Being 46 years old and feeling well every day is a blessing but i dont want to take it for granted. And if i can help someone else to feel better like this then i will. Going to begin with my best friend. Will call him in the AM to get started.
