iPhone camera vs mirror physique

Does anyone else feel like they look like hot garbage when taking iPhone pics of yourself? I mean full body pics when you set the timer on your phone and stand it up.
I feel like I look amazing in the mirror, but it seems like all of the minor imperfections and asymmetries I know I have are magnified when taking pics of myself. Also I don’t look near as muscular as I do in the mirror.
I’ve really been thinking about it and I think the mirror is a more accurate reflection of what other people see when they look at you, with the exception that you’re just flipped from their view.
I think it may also have something to do with the camera turning your 3D body into a 2D image. A mirror has no choice but to show you the 3D image you really are.
I may have body dysmorphia, but I can definitely understand how it exists when there’s such a big disparity between mirrors and cameras.

Obligatory camera adds 10 pounds?
When trying to compare the 2 also factor in lighting. Cameras rely a lot on lighting and shadowing to give ideal effects. Because of angles, maybe you don't look as defined?

Yes!!!!
My old iPhone X would take mirror pictures and capture what I saw almost perfectly. My new iPhone 12 camera is crap. The picture it takes of my reflection isn’t even close.
*it brightens when it shouldn’t, the lighting is off, and the color doesn’t match. I hope it’s a setting that I just don’t know how to fix

I think the solution would be to stop taking pictures of yourself.
Dang this world and the need for selfies.

Well I’ve always wanted to know what my physique looks like from other peoples perspective. It drives me crazy that I can’t just look at my body from the outside and analyze it. Pics and the mirror will never be as good as a pair of eyes, so I would just like to know the next best way.

The focal length of the camera distorts the image. To get the best representation of what you actually look like to other people, you’d want to use a good camera with a 50mm lens.
There could be some iOS camera apps that let you manually set that, but I’m not sure.

It’s a psychological phenomenon. What we see in the mirror is a distorted version of reality.
Here’s why you look better in mirrors than you do in pictures

I already addressed this in the OP. The mirror is how people see you, JUST IN REVERSE.
I’m not talking about seeing the left side of my face on the right side and freaking out, I’m talking about the camera totally distorting your 3D image into a 2D mess. Lighting being off just a smidge can change everything. The lens of the camera can make you look fatter than you are and exaggerates imperfections.

Having someone else take your picture will give you a more accurate representation of how the "world" sees you. Looking in a mirror will always be a distortion.

A full sized wide mirror cannot distort, it can only flip. Cameras make your 3D image 2D and distorts because of the lens and lighting.

How many dimensions do you think mirrors have?

I seem to have a mental image of myself that doesn’t match what I see in the mirror. I like the mirror image better than my mental image.

A lot of mirrors and especially gym mirrors and fighting room have slight convexes or tilts that can make you look bigger, plus a lot of gyms and changing rooms adjust the lighting as well making you look better...it is also not unintentional
