My SO and I started out keto diet on Monday. I ordered some strips from Amazon and got them in yesterday. Tested around 3 PM and it showed no trace. Tested around 1 AM today (had to stay up for night shift tonight) and showed large traces. Then this morning around 10 AM I showed small traces.

Is it normal to fluctuate like this? I should note these are urine test strips and not blood.

They are generally unreliable and tend to add stress to what shouldn't be a stressful dynamic.

I think it's Keto Gains that advocates "measure progress, not ketones" and I think that's a healthy way to approach it.

You can taste it in your mouth if you’re in ketosis when you wake up :)

Never have. Can be unreliable. Once your body adapts to fat burning the ketones are used up instead of showing up on the urine strips.

My "check" is my mood and what I've been eating. If I've been eating well, I am feeling great. I eat like crap - feel like crap and wont be in ketosis.

I've pretty much determined that chasing ketones isn't the way. You should be eating correctly, therefor, ketones are the byproduct of eating correctly. Ketones will be higher when fasted and eating lots of fat - and lower during feeding times or gone during carbohydrate burning. This is how the body works.
