I'm 33. I had never benched more than 200 lbs before yesterday, in which I benched 205 3x fairly easily. I should have tried to max but didn't have time. And I have not benched in years.

Back when I actually went to the gym regularly and benched 2-3x a week, I was never able to get over 200 lbs.

Is this old man strength? Is it happening? I've long wondered when it happens.

Sorry, pal, you are still young. Things start getting murky on the other side of 35 so keep your chin up--you're almost there.

Old man strength isn't exactly weight lifting strength, but it can help. Old Man Strength is being able to do things that you wouldn't think you could do, because you don't lift a ton. It is working strength. Like busting loose a rusty nut with just a hand wrench. Or using a chainsaw to cut down a tree and chop it into logs you haul to the road in a wheelbarrow for a good 2 hours without tiring out. Stuff like changing a tire on a big truck and throwing it on the studs your first try, even though it weighs like 95 lbs an is awkward to hold. When your knuckles can be checked and someone backs down, you know you've attained it.

What about cauliflower ears? When I first started doing BJJ I didn't drain my left ear one time and now it looks like I am related to Randy Couture. I hate it but when my kid started wrestling for his high school 4 years ago, I found out that it is a badge of honor to have it and honestly, I wouldn't mess with a guy that has it worse than me.

True, OMS is not physical strength. OMS is actually life knowledge and lack of fear. Our mind holds us back more than we know. In working out we do not fear being sore, because we live being sore daily. We spit in the face of DOMS and say "frick you Jobu".

the key to increasing your bench max is overloading on incline, decline and flat bench flys on chest days

Or be very sensitive with it. I actually really messed up my neck (C1 and C2) doing it about 3 years ago.

If you are in Austin, one of our sister schools is over there. Awesome place.

It's usually at 40 when you start pushing weight you could only dream about in your 20s.

..and you're doing nothing out of the ordinary in your workouts compared to your 20s, either.

I started maxing out around 315 once I hit 35. I could never get above 275 before then.

I was 5'11" 175 pounds too.

Old man strength is awesome.

What's your dx?

I'd say learn how to bridge and do neck exercises. Build up very Slowly.

Think I'm going to start adding jiu jitsu to my judo

Hmm. Sounds like bad news. Is it even possible to be sensitive with it? What was the nature of your cervical spine injury?
