My uncle has it every once in awhile, it looks extremely painful. His entire foot will swell up. The doctor calls something in, not sure what it is but even then it takes a few days for it to get back to normal. Isn’t gout for the most part preventable?

If you don't eat meat, milk products, leafy greens, or anything high in purine then I suppose.

No beer allowed either, I was hoping some folks on here knew of something, anything to aid in the pain and help a bit. As I said, it has been 2 years...

My dad has been in the hospital with it a couple of times. They put him on a daily prescription of something and has had no trouble since.

Lots of people see success by eliminating sugar and going minimal carb. Gout is a sugar issue more than a meat issue.

Either indomethacin or colchicine for an acute attack. Steroid shot to the affected joint also works.

Been drinking very tart cherry juice, eating cherries, taking apple cider vinegar, and it is a bit better.

Allipurinol is the medicine I used to take, stopped it for 6 months, had testing and was told I didn't need it anymore by Doctors.

2 years total without it, but not now.

So, is it really a sugar issue over red meat/shell fish? Wow.

I got it a lot when I used to weigh 250+. I've since dropped below 200 a couple times. I notice when I get closer to 200 pounds and below, I seem to have less problems with it. I also seem to have problems when I eat more carbohydrates/sugar.

I almost feel lucky that I got the attacks because they were the main thing that kicked me in the arse enough and helped convince myself I needed to stop being a fat slob.

Nothing I ever took really gave me much quick relief. Arthritis medicine and lots of water seemed to help some when I had the attacks.

I'm no doctor so don't take anything I say as gospel but I really don't think those foods are the problem.

Yes, basically, uric acid is a breakdown of purines and meat has the highest concentration of purines, it was assumed that meat = hyperuricemia aka gout. Gerald Reaven (endocrinologist and professor emeritus of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine) wrote, "the more insulin-resistant an individual, the higher the serum uric acid concentration."

There is also some connections between sleep apnea and gout

Longer term, definitely. But some people do experience a short-term uric acid balance issue in the adaptation phase of ketosis. We had a discussion on here a few weeks ago about it.

I had gout for years. Now when a bout is coming, I buy a new pair of running shoes, take 2 Advil and 2 cranberry capsules.

95% of people who continually get gout is because their shoes have worn down. The arch is flat and the heel doesn’t have great support.

Try it. It works.

I live in the br area, and I was getting rare gout flare ups. At first it was in my fingers - I didn't know what the hell happened. Then eventually it would be in a foot, the last time I had it, the day after eating some oysters at dragos. It was a bad flare up that lasted about a week. I found a specialists that basically said it could be diet, heredity etc. Did various treatment and studies and she put me on Allopurinol daily - I haven't had a flare up in about 18 months.

I also cut out soda, I never ate much red meat.
