I’m more tore up than usual. I’ve done a 50k, 40 miler, 50 miler and now 100k since November. Speaking of dimensions I am 6’ 240 lbs. Resilience is most definitely the name of the game when it comes to ultra.

Side note: my strength has been very consistent considering I haven’t been strength focused in a long time. I’m good for a 550 DL,
375 BP and a 60 mile run hahaha

That was a pretty good fall. Glad to hear you're none the worse for.
Congrats on the finish.

Surely I know you then, hit me up on FB messenger.
I did my first marathon 5 years ago, so you can actually progress pretty fast past the marathon. I chose to do Half and Full Ironman’s after that first marathon, but had I chose to pursue ultra’s then(I don’t even think I knew what an ultra was then!lol) it’d of only taken me another couple years.

so what was your fuel/food strategy? how many calories did you try to get every hour? did you try to sleep any?

So I’m one of the few people you’ll see out there without a hydration pack on, I have 2 herniated discs in my neck and run without a shirt on, so I just use 2 handheld 20oz. bottles. I’m a huge fan of tailwind (never upsets my stomach and has a good bit of salt and sugar in it) and it makes up about half of my nutrition. I used 3 scoops per 2 bottles/40oz and I go through both bottles just about every aid station. At the aid stations I re-fill the bottles with my tailwind that’s been measured out in little baggies and carried on a nutrition belt on my waste. At the aid stations I drink their water and a shot or two of their Gatorade and usually snack on more natural and sweeter stuff earlier like bananas and by nightfall I’ll eat whatever they have(potato chips, Oreos, chicken noodle soup). I carry Honey Stinger Gold gels packs and do them often.
I believe in over-hydrating as long as you don’t over salt. You definitely gotta drink more often then when you’re thirsty. There was times during the day when the sun was directly over me and I’d run out of my bottles with 3 miles left to the next loop and I’d start pulling sips from my buddies hydration pack.
One odd note was about mile 88 at roughly 2:30am I drank a cup of coffee that I thought might upset my stomach, but it put my arse in overdrive and I went on to run 3 miles straight before going back to a walk/run.

I love the “over hydration” approach bc that’s what has worked for me as well, especially being larger. I also have to salt and carb more than others. I steadily hit Gatorade and Liquid IV in my bottles. I also carry 2 bottles of pickle juice. When I feel the cramps start I bolus some pickle juice or salt pill and focus on my breathing. Long, slow, deep breaths coupled with the salt bolus stops cramps for me very fast. At the aid stations I’ll hit some Coke and bananas with the occasional candy or PBJ. Eventually I’ll use a pickle juice bottle to tote some coke. My absolute go to food is oranges. Idk what is but those might as well be steroids to me. Every time I eat one it’s an instant pickmeup.

I think I’ll try to do maybe 1 50K and 1 50 miler competitively between now and November then try and go sub 24 at Children of the Cane in November if it’s cool enough.

I've got nothing as far as races

With 2 young kids and full work schedule, its hard for me to find the time to train for a long race. I keep telling myself that I will, but then fall/winter rolls around and I just can't seem to sustain any training.

I probably just need to sign up for something to force my hand.

I definitely want to do some of the Wild Azalea or Red Dirt races next year.

Ill be doing the LA Full next weekend then "The Old School" 30 miler @ Lincoln Parish Park in April.

I need to find something in the 50k-ish range between August and November to prep for the SM 100k in November. Ill top off the year by pacing one of my baws at the Loup Garou 100 miler in December.

The 100k will be my big race this year though. I will visit the idea of a hundo if I make it out alive.

Me and a buddy are doing the voodoo bontemps 2 man relay the end of this month. After that I’m taking a break. My wife will be spitting out boy#3 in may and she wants to be in half marathon shape by fall. I’m gonna take the summer off from racing and really put in some speed work.

Edit: I’m sure me and my crew will all be in on the races y’all are listing. We did them all this year. Not sure what distances yet. We considering red dirt 100 for 2022.

Nice! I told Walker I’d volunteer at the Voodoo so I should see you out there! I know Josh Chauvin had told me he planned on going sub 24 there, that’d be insane if he pulls that off!
