Well, gimme a number. I'm willing to try almost anything suggested by an anonymous stranger over the internet.

You should be doing about 2500 calories a day

There's also some legit anti-cancer benefits to fasting, which is worth consideration by everyone.

At some point, your focus has to shift from just body composition to health, and fasting is a good conduit to long term health.

Wow, that high? I work at a desk for too many hours a week and my thought is that as a result my daily base level calorie burn w/o exercise is low.

You should reverse diet back up then start lowering calories again. Jump your calories up to 2000 for a week and slowly increase (50 to 100 cals in fats and carbs) per week until you start gaining consistently..then maintenance for a few weeks then cut calories by 500 and slowly lower them as needed.

I guess this lets me figure out what my base burn level is?

Edit to add: how many grams of protein a day?

Yep. Then you can cut on better macros, which should help you maintain strength in the gym.

1g protein/lb of lean body mass. Most likely around 170-180 for you.

Did my first 24 hr fast yesterday. Wasn't terrible but I did get a little lightheaded mid afternoon and hungry just before dinner.

Pounded water to help with cravings, but made me worry a bit about electrolyte imbalances.

Watched video yesterday. I've learned to follow the 24 hr fast in recent years without any problems. Not sure if I would be able to fast for 3-4 days. Anyone ever fasted that long before and is it as tough as it sounds?

Yea, just the way your body was changing made me think undereating. Post your email and I will email you and give you a good caloric number with macro breakdown.

It is really easy to fast for a day. It isn't that tough to fast for three days. After six days lots of people apparently have a euphoric moment. Whether it is tough or not really depends on your normal will power... and whether you happen to be around people eating delicious food

Is Ketosis Dangerous? (Science of Fasting & Low Carb Keto)

Some think Ketosis is dangerous, but it might just be the most efficient fuel for humans.

New video by What I've learned. It is pretty great stuff about ketones and their efficiency compared to glucose. Even references a study proving ketone diet enhances physical and cognitive performance.

Probably one of the best podcast I've ever listened to on dieting. Mike Dolce who is a nutritionist for several crossfit games athletes and Olympians breaks down why Keto/Paleo/IIFYM and dieting fads are bull shite.

I had been a big proponent of IIFYM for the past couple years and was religiously plugging in numbers to MyFitnessPal.

Switched now to more of a zone diet of eating regular high nutritional foods in moderation. All in all, I agree with this guy that we should focus more on our intake of micro nutrients rather than macro nutrients.

Yea, I listened to that one. Very good. I use my combo diet, with an IIFYM base. I plug stuff in for sure but I also have a huge focus on micronutrients in the diet.
I can tell you when I go on vacation and stuff I don't track at all barely but because of how I eat I don't see big differences when I get back from when I leave usually.
I eat good whole unprocessed nutrient dense foods. Eat until I am full, not stuffed. Fuel my body for the activities I do, the rest kind of takes care of itself at this point.

Upped calories and protein, primarily by adding 3 chicken breasts to what I eat. Dropped 3# and a full inch off waist since Tuesday morning, feel great. Heading to gym now to see how that goes.

Maybe a stupid question, but if I put like a 5 calorie crystal light flavor pack in a bottle of water, does that "break" the fast? Can you only drink unflavored, pure water?

No it probably won't break your fast, but the artificial sweeteners may trigger hunger pangs.
