Fasting vs. Eating Less: What's the Difference? (Science of Fasting)
This is about the drastic physiological differences between fasting and eating less.
Cliff notes: You lose fat while fasting and certain stuff kick in, like growth hormone, to protect and minimize muscle loss. Eating less has muscle cannibalization. The quicker you kick into ketosis for a fast, since all fasts eventually hit ketosis, the less muscle you lose. Your metabolism also gets higher while fasting. When eating less your metabolism rate lowers.

I've only been doing 16-17 hour fasts thus far. I'm also eating 500 calories under maintenance. The lack of breakfast makes it much easier to hit my calorie target.
The only hunger I ever get is on days I drink BCAA's before my morning workout. I think the artificial sweeteners in it triggers the hunger feeling. Could also be the amino acids. Oh well, just have to chug water and power through.

What if you're running a calorie deficit on a keto diet, while still getting 170+ grams of protein/day?

+1 to this guy. I've been doing the same stuff and seeing ridiculous results

If you are not losing muscle because you get enough protein then I imagine you are fine.
I posted this mostly for people who have no idea on how detrimental eating less is vs just fasting. A lot of people are trying way too hard to lose fat when it is better to just fast.
There's obviously outliers to everything...

I've been eating less but not to the point of hunger. I eat mainly proteins and little carbs under 25g a day. My portions are smaller now and I'm getting full. However I'm not seeing a huge difference on the scale.

Me too, exactly this. Lifting heavy, doing HIIT a few times a week, and haven't lost a goddamn pound in a month.

Have you added muscle? The scale may not tell the full story.

If you lift heavy, it's pretty common not to lose weight. You are burning calories but also building muscle. The fit of your clothes is a much better indicator

Thanks, yall are both right. I am seeing more musculature overall, and clothes fit differently/better.
Let me rephrase: low carb, high protein, lifting heavy, HIIT a few times a week, and can't lose the goddamn 15 pounds of fat from my lower chest through my belly, into my hips. Stopped losing inches around waist about a month ago and can't get it going again.

Can you eat a boiled egg without the yolk for breakfast and still be in a fast since it's only 17 calories?

Eat less. Decrease calories slowly.. 50-100cals/week until you lose more.

It is hard to give a definitive answer not knowing how much and what ratio to maintenance he is eating now. But my initial thoughts are the opposite, I am thinking he isn't eating enough (again, hard to say without knowing the actual numbers)

What numbers do you need?
51 y.o., 6'4", 225#, 40" waist, +/-. Trying to get to 36-37" waist, 200-210#.

Take back what I said. You need to eat more.
