Keep in mind, from what I understand, pain pills were huge among bb’s in the 90s. Those things frick up your kidneys along with everything else that they’re doing...

Yep. That plus diuretics are a bad combo

I've unfortunately had to change my lifting habits in the last year or so due to various injuries. It sucks
Seeing what has happened to Ronnie puts it into perspective better
I'm right there with you. I've been sticking with goblet squats, walking lunges, and Bulgarian split squats now instead of heavy squats and leg presses, since my knees have taken a beating in the past.
Some people may think I'm being a p****, but I don't care. I still want to move around normally as I get into my 40s, 50s, and beyond.

I see no reason you should stop doing regular back squats or other lifts as you age. Unless you already have an injury, why stop? Sure, as you get older you won’t he able be quite the same, but I think it’s an incorrect notion that doing hard lifts as you age is harmful. Unless you have shite form. If if your form is shite, then I can’t help you.

I'm with this. The difficulty of the lift doesn't correlate with injury potential unless your form is terrible.
Aging has been a reminder my form has to be dialed in, but I don't worry about the lift or weight.

has nothing to do with squats. Has to do with taking massive amounts of steroids(5grams + weekly) and massive amounts of pain killers and anit inflammatories to mask the signals the body was telling them. a goblet squat is no different then a back squat from the knees perspective.

Respectfully disagree. I can much easier get into a full squat position with the weight in front of me as opposed to on my back...and front squats are not an option due to AC joint issues in my left shoulder. Back squats are an awesome exercise, but not everyone is built for that movement, and what worked for one lifter at a period in their life doesn't always work for them at another period. 20+ years of my own experience in the gym and prior experience working as an exercise physiologist at a PT clinic with athletes has shown me that.
You are right about the heavy abuse of steroids and anti-inflammatory meds being a major issue in regards to Coleman, Yates, et al. But their training styles during their BB careers can't be discounted. Also, making a blanket statement that MY knee pain "has nothing to do with squats" is simply ignorant to state.

Wasn't talking about yyour knee pain, was talking about their inability to walk without pain.
And the goblet squat is different for the reasons you mentioned but not different on the shear of the knee. I wasn't talking about other problems, just the knee.

Except you can't move as much weight.
