Cutting carbs and strength loss

The other day I ran into a friend of mine that I use to train with pretty often. We’ve always been pretty comparable in size. (I’m 255 and he’s 240). I’ve always been a good bit stronger than him and he’s always had to work extra hard to maintain size and strength. Well he’s leaned out big time. He’s down to 210 and looks fantastic (no homo). Very lean and very muscular. I’ve been bouncing some questions off of him and he says he really likes the way he looks but his strength has plummeted and he said he suffers through workouts. This comes as no surprise to me but here’s my question: How much strength loss, if any, have you experienced while cutting carbs out? I believe he stayed under 50/day and kept protein high.

You would have to intake a frick ton of fat to keep or increase strength if you significantly cut out carbs.
So much fat is unsustainable or not enjoyable for most people
The glycogen from carbs is crucial for muscle growth and recovery once the energy from fat is gone.

Yeah. I’m about to add carbs again. I’m tired of being sluggish. But I will cycle like I have been.

Your buddy needs to do CKD or TKD. Some dextrose before a workout works wonders. You don’t need to go full bore carbs.

It definitely effects strength. I’m cutting 10 lbs as quick as possible (185-175) and hopefully that’s gets the last of the fat gut. Just powering through workouts as best as possible until then. Then I’m upping my carbs In that 150-200g/day area to put on muscle.

He has strength loss in between workouts? Needs to drink some ketoaid and/or reduce his deficit.

dont understand that comment about in between workouts at all.
but OP, your friend needs to start using TKD approach using carbs during the peri-workout window(pre, intra, post workout).

I’m trying to do the same thing. I’m hovering around 178-180 right now and I want to get to 170 before I gain muscle. I cut carbs early last week, and my workouts sucked all week. I’m hoping I can drop these last few pounds in the next 2-3 weeks.

If he feels light-headed in between workouts he needs more sustenance. You are talking about how to prep for a workout.
What if walking is just hard in between workouts due to his low carbs.
I think that is what the OP is describing.

I don't think it's a direct result of carbs but the result of being in a calorie deficit. And he lost 40lbs. That's gonna affect your strength.
