In my head, I feel like I need to keep my routine exactly the same during a cut, so I can see if I'm decreasing in strength as I lose weight. If strength tapers off over the course of a week or two, I'd probably increase my calories. Is this as big of a deal as I'm making it out to be?

I'm thinking maybe it's fine if I keep the major compound movements the same, then just switch up any accessories I want. I'll wait until after the diet is over to modify any major lifts.

As long as your protein intake is where it needs to be, I wouldn’t worry about it. You won’t grow muscle during a cut, you just have to preserve the muscle you’ve gained.

I've definitely got some contributing to the process. Strength gains have progressed despite being in a slight deficit the last three weeks. Five more weeks to go, maybe longer.

I always try to maintain strength during a cut, I don’t expect to put on muscle. I’ll drop the reps and keep the weight as high as possible (for compounds). For accessories I just go by feel

How so? Your body needs energy to repair and grow the muscle. How can you not do that process using your stored body fat?

Anecdotally, ive stayed the same weight for the last year plus, but gained a good deal of strength and noticeable mass in areas. How would that be possible if body fat can't be used as energy?

Or how can every 30% plus body fat guy thats never worked out go to the gym and lose weight and add to their lifts?

Hey DeVito,

There is a thing called newbie gains. Likely due to CNS adaptation.

Right, which he said isn't possible if you are in a deficit.

Still struggling to read and comprehend I see.

being fat has nothing to do with adding to their lifts as a newbie.

What about losing fat and adding muscle mass?

Sure. It's not unheard of.

I do want to clarify that from what I've read, most instances are from new and not experienced lifters.

No, it was not. You are saying that anybody that is fat can gain muscle regardless of experience level while on a caloric deficit diet.

Mingo is absolutely right, you can gain muscle on a caloric deficit. It's called gaintaining, and many fitness personalities like Greg Doucette and Jeff Cavaliere adhere to this.

Bulk and Cut cycles are stupid. I love watching Greg Doucette videos where he tears the concept of bulk/cut cycles to shreds and shows how its a massive waste of time.

They can. Who cant? Are you going to go to platitudes about how they aren't going to lift right, which isn't the point?

You said I was wrong, then said I was right (I am), now saying I'm wrong again. You need to decide.

Especially when you are 42, 5'10 200, and lift for 45 minutes 3 or 4 days a week.

I feel attacked.

Anyway, I'm referring to this as a "cut", but I'm really just making sure I'm staying in a slight caloric deficit, 200-400ish calories. I have no plans to do a traditional cut/bulk cycle, but I don't plan to stay in a deficit forever.

What do you think about Mike Israetel? He's got plenty of content that suggests it's a massive waste of time to not use calorie deficits and surpluses to your advantage.

He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Just ignore him.
