Just to be clear, your contention is it's impossible build muscle in a caloric deficit?

You will eventually see your reps go down at certain weights. It's not necessarily due to losing strength, the strength to body weight ratio remains the same.
But I love bulk/cuts. If gives you different goals during the year so your gym/kitchen life doesn't get stale. I always do the same workouts regardless.

I find it's easier to get results if you focus on one thing specifically. Once you try to gain strength, gain muscle, and lose fat on a calorie deficit it makes results much harder to achieve and takes a lot longer.
