I'm finally over my Nathan handheld water bottle, and want to try either a vest or belt.

I've been using this for years>

Pros/Cons to a belt? I wear a Flipbelt, but this belt looks like it would serve the purpose of holding the water (obviously) and keeping up with my phone and GUs.

I'm also not opposed to trying out a hydration pack.

I'm worried about "bounce" with both a belt and hydration pack.

In regards to a hydration pack, are they cumbersome/heavy? Do they make your back extremely hot?

I'm training for a marathon, and my mileage is about to go up considerably in the next couple of weeks.

Help team!

I run with a belt. I don't have any issue with it "bouncing". Just tighten it until it's comfortable. On my long runs, I add another water bottle and that can weigh it down more, but I survive.

This is the belt I use.

there's like... a whole thread about running for this.

i don't like belts. i've tried 2 or 3 but they always bounce no matter what.

there's a Nike handheld that has done pretty decent job for what i need of it. don't love carrying it, but it is what it is.

i have a hydration pack and i like using it a lot but i just don't have that many needs for it most often. i don't have the time to go do really long trail runs that merit one but a couple of times a year. the one i have is similar to your last 3 links. they ratchet down so that flop is minimal.

my crew tends to like things like the below more than the belts or packs with a reservoir on the back

I was researching hydration packs earlier this week but didn’t pull the trigger because of the unknowns you mentioned.

When running the streets, I typically don’t carry anything but will occasionally carry a handheld similar to yours. The other day I went trail running and burned through the handheld quickly.

Here is the one I almost purchased: LINK

I like the idea of the vests with the water bottles in the front (some even have hoses that extend so you don’t have to take the bottle out).

The vests with the vessels in the back and hose, seem like they’d be a pain in the arse to clean

I personally hate running with packs or handhelds. I would throw some small water bottles in the fridge, some in the freezer. I would then go ride and put them out on the route that way i could just grab and run and throw them in a garbage can. Really easy if you are doing 3-4 miles loops or a long out and back.

have tried an ultimate direction vest and the rob krar hydration belt. i still prefer running with a bottle and stashing gu's in a flip belt. jmo.

the vests get really hot imo. and i've had issues with belts bouncing. it's just so much easier to take a swig from a handheld.

This or on my usual 15 Mike route I know where there are hose bibs at businesses, public water fountains or other places to stop and get water. No way am I carrying or wearing something for water.

I have a Nathan hydration pack that’s about 500 g empty with a 2 L bladder, so about 5 lbs fully filled. It’s not insignificant.

It doesn’t feel like it bounces too much normally, but it will chafe the shite out of my back if shirtless, so I’m sure it moves more than I perceive it to.

I’m sure theres a marginal difference in how hot my back gets, but I don’t really notice it as long as it’s not completely miserable outside. If it’s miserable outside, which is mostly when I use it, everything is hot, so I don’t notice it in particular.

I never really thought about in run hydration that much so I’m pretty interested in what folks have to say in this thread. What type of crazy long distances are we talking here? I’d imagine most people that staying hydrated could make it a ways before needing to drink.

Yes most ppl can but after 8-9 miles in this heat and humidity you better have a plan!

if you are worried about bounce, get the Naked Running Band

its a simple design, you can fit all kinds of shite in there (phone, bottles, keys, etc) and it doesn't move AT ALL

I'm in Week 5 of my marathon training, so it's not crazy distances yet. 10 this Saturday FWIW.

I really don't need water unless i'm going out for 5+ miles. I like to carry it though just in case.

Even if i'm running 3 miles, I try and stay at marathon pace and carry what I would be carrying the day of the Marathon. I don't want any surprises race day. That's why i'm trying to find the perfect hydration pack/belt/bottle for me.

I’m not carrying a hand held unless it’s really hot or humid and over 3 miles.

I’m not carrying a bladder unless it’s a trail run over 6.

I have 2 sets of trails that are great for running in my county but neither of them have any water or are situated in a way that I can keep water at the car and come back to it. I’ve only brought the bladder on a couple of 10 miles runs.

I carry a 10 oz handheld anything over 8 miles when it’s hot. Fall/winter this won’t be necessary. Will probably purchase a 22 oz for my ultra in November.
