Broken toe

Is there anything to do for a broken toe other than tape it to the next toe and take pain killers? How long will it hurt? It has swollen and the bruise comes halfway up the top of my foot. This is not the pinky toe, but his next door neighbor

How did you break it?
The only major thing I would worry about is swelling and that nail. If you're not seeing any problems with that then you should be fine.
It will be extremely awkward walking for a couple of days but don't worry that happens to everyone. I would try and get a boot that has some padding under it.

I kicked a grocery cart by accident (yes I'm that clutzy). It seems like the break is closer to the foot than the end of the toe. That's where I'm getting the bone-clicking-on-bone sensation. I've broken both pinky toes before, but this feels a lot worse and definitely more aggravating.

I'm not a doctor but if you haven't I would at least go to the urgent care to get an X-Ray for your piece of mind. If it is something bigger they'll be able to catch it now.

He’d get a bill for them to simply refer him over to a bone and joint clinic.
I broke my big toe once, not much they can do with it. Took fricking forever to fully heal

I broke a big toe as well. The X-Ray verified where I thought it was and was less than $45 including the boot. They never referred me to anyone and there was no reason to go see a bone and joint specialist.
However IF it’s something further up in the foot as the OP said...it could be something worth checking.

Go get an X-ray just to make sure you did not chip a piece of bone off that may have to be removed.

I've broken nearly every toe on each foot. I was 6' tall in the 7th grade. I was more worried about smacking my head on things than my feet. Also, I had the coordination of a great dane puppy.
The only thing I would worry about OP, is that you may have a break in the foot as well. It could be that you are not letting your joint reset. You may need to get off the foot. It may be prudent to bite the bullet and have the foot X-rayed.

I broke my little toe several years ago walking around barefoot and caught it on a piece of wood in the yard. It was out 90 degrees from the other toes.
I pulled it back in place as best I could and just taped it to the one next to it and kept it like that for a couple weeks. Hurt like hell for a while. Really not much you can do besides that.
Kind of like broken ribs in that way. Breath out and let them tape you up tight and try to not cough, sneeze or get out of breath.

If there is no major deformity to the toe, then the treatment is simply buddy splinting and time. Bone will take 6-8 weeks to heal under normal circumstances. Pain and swelling usually improves around week 3-4.

Thanks for checking on me. I didn't get xrays. The bruise has mostly faded, the swelling has gone down and no more bone clicking when I walk. I'm still keeping it buddy taped. The pain comes and goes, but is much better than the day I did it.
Am I still looking at 4-6 weeks to be completely healed??

Glad it’s better and not bone in foot.Usually about 6 weeks.My wife,in 2 years,broke a toe,then foot bone that required surgery,then another foot bone and was in boot about 6 weeks.She always complains that I walk too slow.I do walk slow but I don’t break any frikken toes or foot bones.
