Ryno, consider wearing a weight vest when you do them if you want more burn

with his back issue, any loading on the upper body might be a problem. He will have to play with it and see. But you bring up a great point and maybe after he gets used to bodyweight he can maybe load the movement with belt squats.
I do think though more people should use the 4 main lifts at most and just do bodyweight movements with weighted vest. They would be much more athletic.
Honestly I dunno how the hell any of that is going to make him feel. Only know that reverse hyper can help him more then likely.
Chicken why don't you join us over here more often?

Another option if he wants to avoid loading the upper body is belt squats. It has more ability to progressively overload with zero upper body loading.

This.
The GOAT lower back exercise for correcting issues
Edit: just saw the OP has herniated discs. Please proceed with caution.
Otherwise I would 100% recommend reverse hypers for their traction effect.

I used to do a ton of these. CrossFit style: unlock your knees and just plummet to the bottom of the squat, and use the bounce at the bottom to rocket yourself back up. Prepare for sore legs.

I travel a lot for work and these are a great hotel room exercise. Push-ups and sit-ups on a hotel room carpet always put me at risk for carpet burn.
